In that context it means no you do not like Tom. In other useages it can mean kind of....like...It's not really that important to me..here it means it just doesn't matter.

I agree with all of the above answers. It is an indirect way of saying 'I am not interested in him". The person does not want to say I like him or I do not like him. It sounds like a young person to me. It could mean that the person does not want to hurt the other person's feelings or it could also mean that the person is scared of letting their feelings known. It is always so hard to tell. The best thing to do is to be her friend, the best relationships stat from friendships. Good luck:)

not really means that something isn't exactly as the other person says. It is alike but not exactly the same. Yes you could say it has the same meaning with kind of but it hasn't the same meaning with not at all which means that something doesn't even match with what the other person is saying.

no, "not really" is more than "kind of". If you're asked if you like Tom, then you say not really. It means you like Tom but not that much. But if you say kind of, it means you like him a little.

"not really" means not exactly.
If the person says "not really" about liking Tom, it means that she is not saying she doesn't like him, but she is definitely not saying she does. In this example, she probably said it because she may like Tom as a friend or an individual, but she does not like him in a romantic way.

On a scale of how much you like Tom, "not really" is more than "not at all" but less than "kind of".

It's a polite way to say, "No, I do not like him." It means *No.*

"NOT REALLY" SOUNDS LIKE KIND OF. BUT NOT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE THERE ARE REASONS WHY THEY DON'T LIKE THE PERSON AND KIND OF, SOUNDS THE SAME AS NOT REALLY.
