Quote from the ASPCA: "Grapes and raisins appear to cause renal failure in dogs who’ve ingested large amounts. However, we have not determined with certainty the toxic component, or the exact mechanism that causes renal failure. It is also not clear if only certain dogs are affected, or if long-term ingestions can lead to the same effects that a large one-time ingestion can. Because there are still many unknowns regarding the toxic potential of grapes and raisins, it is advisable not to give grapes or raisins to dogs in any amount."

Hello Gina my friend, as you already know by others who have posted; Raisins and grapes are toxic to animals. I was shocked to read that because I have given my sweet dog grapes in the past, not a lot but every once in a while I would. Thank God nothing happened to him. I will never give it to any animal (well parrots I would) again.

It's unclear but why chance it?

It may just be some dogs and, for those dogs, the concentrated nature of raisins may be enough to do them in. Since dogs don't encounter raisins that often, it's better not to take the risk.

I've had dogs who ate red and white grapes in clusters with no ill effects. Those dogs also ate the occasional bits of chocolate and enjoyed many table 'scraps.' They ate 'human' food nearly all of their lives. I'm sure they ingested raisins, probably in bagels, at one time or another.

Lived to ripe old ages.

-------------- Here's a list of things that are or may be toxic to your dog. It just seems that the list of foods gets longer all the time.

true.. so are grapes. The chemical in raisins and grapes is yet unknown.. the amount of toxity is also unkown, some dogs have had alot of grapes with no effect, and some dogs became seriously ill after only eating a few. Best bet.. dont feed raisins or grapes.

Yes,they are.I can't remember exactly what they do to dogs, but I think something in the raisins can cause kidney or liver failure.Grapes are bad too,as are onions, avacados, apple seeds, and several other foods I can't think of right now!

It's true

Even the Urban Legends web site agrees http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_toxic_raisins.htm

It's not just grapes & dogs.

The site that holds a rock festival I work at has llamas & alpacas, and one was killed a few years back because someone fed it a burger .... they can't deal with meat
