Although the new law on compensation stipulates that 10 billion German marks is to be paid into the foundation's bank account - half of it by the state and the other by German companies who benefited from forced labour - the foundation has so far only received the German government's share...

It is gratifying to see victims of Nazi German WWII atrocities
starting to be compensated for their suffering after 54 years of the end of World War II. The compensation for suffering im-posed upon the Polish people by the Soviet Union has not even begun. However, not all persons are being compensated for their suffering and deprivation at the hands of Nazi Germany. Persons who do not fall in any current classified categories have been totally ignored. For example, Polish children of WWII who were killed, wounded, orphaned or suffered from depravation of food, shelter, medical attention and deprived of their childhood.
Holocaust survivors whose properties in Poland were seized during World War II joined forces on Monday with Poles who lost their property to Communist nationalization to demand a law on compensation.

"Poland is the only country apart from Belarus where this issue has never been settled," said Jehuda Evron, chairman of the US-based Holocaust Restitution Committee.
http://jewsforhillary.wordpress.com/2007/04/11/clinton-lobbies-polish-government-for-resitution-of-property-stolen-during-wwii/Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote to the Polish prime minister requesting that his country enact a restitution law for property confiscated during the Nazi and communist eras. Also signing the letter to Jaroslaw Kaczynski were members of the Helsinki Commission. Clinton (D-N.Y.) and the commission want the Polish government to ensure that properties obtained illegally will be returned or the owners will be properly compensated.
The signers welcomed statements by Polish government officials that they would work to pass legislation on the issue by the end of this year, but the commission expressed concerns that the victims have experienced numerous delays in their efforts to gain restitution.

Poland and Germany have recently been exchanging words about the effects of the German occupation during WW2 and the amount of Polish people murdered by the Germans in WW2. To the people of these countries, memories of the war are still very painful and very much part of their lives. Some say that Poland was compensated after the war when its borders were extended but then the Russians took over and the rest is history. I think it is important to understand that these issues are still very real to people who live in these countries that were directly affected by the Nazi regime and later by the communists. We need to respect their experiences and their feelings but we need to also move towards the future with lessons learnt for the past.

And why do you want to know this? The war ended over 50 years ago, more like 60! I have several Polish friends & none of them have ever mentioned this, I think they are more interested in the future than harking back to the past all of the time. Where any of the occupied countries compensated after the war? Who cares, it's over & done with.
