like a canon better than any other brand. They are usually thicker (better battery life) and they occasionally take AA batteries, which you can find anywhere (If you lose charge on vacation, stop into a gas station or a truck stop. Instant power again!). With something like that thin casio ex slim, you'd have to get a power converter or a car charger to get more charge on the road! Also, rechargeable AA batteries (NOT AN UNDESIRABLE FEATURE) (when the existing ones wear out after a couple hundred charges with your standard Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries, 4 might run you $15, ($20 with a charging dock) and you can put two in the camera and put two in the charger, ready to use when your in-camera ones die).
Also, Cannons have the old-fashioned viewfinder, allowing you to judge with your own eyes what shot you're taking, and you can shut off the back display, saving about 80% battery life!!
Avoid Samsung, they get sent in for repair a lot.
Also, mega pixels are a myth unless you are going to be blowing pictures up to the size of a wall. I bet if I took the same picture with two cameras and made them both the same size to fit your computer screen, you couldn't tell the difference between a 6 and a 10 mega pixel. So don't waste your money on the mega pixel myth. 5-6 is just fine for regular family photos... try 7-8 for poster sizes and don't bother going higher unless you really want to make your family vacation into wall paper!

There's many decent cameras available under $250. I like the Fuji F20, or the Canon 'A' series.

Check the feature search here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp to see your options and some good unbiased reviews.

Under $250 you'll usually run into the problem of either getting a camera with a low amount of resolution/mega pixels, or you'll get one with undesirable features like AA batteries.

What I would do is check www.woot.com for a few weeks. Every so often they'll throw on a Samsung 8MP camera for only $150.

Canon PowerShot A630. 4X optical zoom, 8 megapixels. Will
give you an excellent 8X10 Print. Very good on AA rechargeable batteries, also has manual controls in addition to auto. What's there not to like?
