I don't know why, but lately, I really want to play the flute. Is it hard to learn and play? And do you know any facts that might convince my parents to let me get one? I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

Like the others mentioned, you should join your school's band.
The flute can be hard to play at first, and many beginners get lightheaded. See if one of your friends has a flute you could borrow for a day. I started out with a Standard of Excellence flute book. It teaches you how to blow, where to put your fingers, and everything. I was able to teach myself to play the flute.

The reason you should borrow a flute first is because you may want to quit after practicing for a while. You must be patient and practice often.

The easiest note to play on a flute is a B flat (left thumb and index finger, right index finger and pinky).
The Standard of Excellence flute book has a finger chart so you know which fingers to press for the right note.

You could also try convincing your parents to get you a flute teacher if you're really that interested. Make sure you know you will play your flute often before your parents buy one for you because if you quit on it, they may be hesitant to let you do new hobbies (that will cost money...).

Check out the links below for the book I mentioned!

Hope this helps.

I am a flute teacher, professional flutists, and competitions judge. Convincing your parents to spend the $$ is the hard part - so we often start here; get yourself a *Yamaha fife*. For under $10, you can get one from Lark in the Morning, or other places. Makes sure it is THIS one you get. You can learn how to blow into it, and learn where you fingers go. You can get a fife instruction book, and learn a LOT - and everything will trnasfer to the flute when you switch over.

Having a TEACHER will help a great deal. That teacher may wish you to start on the flute. Do NOT get a flute first - have them advise you. Do NOT buy something off eBay!!!! You will be sorry if you do! Meanwhile, you can also go to Yahoo Groups and join Flutenet. There are about 3,00 of us who will help you there! Good luck!

It looks like you have a lot of great answers on this. My suggestion would be to borrow someones flute and give it a try. If it is calling out to you then you should definitely give it a chance. Perhaps you could work to pay for part of it and let you parents pay the rest. This may help convince them that you are serious about it.

I've been playing flute for over 7 years, and I love it! Some of the positive things I've gotten from it are, better air control, music helps you in math, and I have friends for life that were with me in highschool.

Also, if your school has one, I suggest joining the marching band. I've had the time of my life in marching band, and I would go back to High School just to go back to it!

I agree with Flauta, when school starts up join the band, and btw- many schools have instruments for you to play while you're learning.. so that gives you a chance to see how well you like the flute before your parents go out and buy one. Talk to the band director! Have fun!

It depends on what you mean by "learn."

If you mean "just to get the hang of it and be able to play somewhat for school band or something", then yeah...it wouldn't be that difficult to learn.

But if you mean "to become good at playing the flute/master it", it is not easy in the slightest. Becoming really good at playing any instrument takes hours of serious practice and commitment.
