Why are so many people posting hate filled rhetoric about the Catholic church? Just because some priests molested come kids does not mean every single priest or religious person did so. How can you say things like "I will never give a dime to a church because they cover up their scandals with it?" Not only do they do that,

~they pay their bills and taxes
~buy the wine and wafers
~make bibles and rosaries so people who can't afford them can have them.
~They pay for orphanages they run
~food and clothes for those orphans
~food and clothes for the priests, nuns, and monks
~Cars for priests so they can go to people for their last rites, ~gas for the cars

~not to mention feeding children in 3rd world countries
~donating money to rebuild towns after natural disasters
~to provide food for victims of war
~build more churches in towns that don't have one

The money you donate does not go for the Catholic church to "cover up" the mistakes priests have made.

If the church wanted to, they would let those priests go to jail. The priests are no longer in a leadership postion, and most likely are excommunicated. They are in no way "covering it up", just trying to make the pain people have gone through go away.

Oh, yeah...and the victims didn't have to accept that money...

Oh, and my question to make it clear again, is how can people generalize a church with over 1,000,000,000 followers by what a few misguided people have done.

Michael B, what are you talking about?

By the way, I am not Catholic...so people who are "disagreeing" with the Catholic church are not disagreeing with me. I'm just sick of people persecuting each other.

Whetherman_1965...don't the priests still have to pay that $5 tax on their liscenses? I mean I am not up on all that...but land taxes, taxes on the car?

OH! also something...insurance for the priests monks and nuns. Health, dental, eye, car, etc.

Weahterman_1965...again. wow, such ignorance in your answer...the victims could've rejected the money and persued a crimal case...couldn't they? But no, they took the money.

As far as those who HAD to take it because of the SoL, that's fine, but of course, they didn't HAVE to take it.

To iam...yes, (if I had children) and someone offered my kid candy, I would say "Thanks, but no thanks" even if I knew them, you never know what they might do.

Also, maybe they just want their kid to be healthy and are keeping them away from cookies and candy?

I'm not religious, but this is what I think when I should donate money to a church or for the sick children in whatever country.
Money is money.Everyone wants money, its to survive, hence the new age salvery our generation is going through for jobs.
Have you ever heard the statement 'When you do something good,no one would remember, but when you so a single bad thing,no one will ever forget'
Thats how it is.No one will forget that the temple across the street from me scammed so many followers for over a million dollars for real estate and left.
These people placed their trust in him,and he just took their money and used it for his selfish reasons.Of course,we are only humans. When you place your trust in a person to keep a secret, and they don't,you obviously don't trust them again.
People never forget it too, cause it hurts.
It hurt me when my cousin's church shipped her off to Africa. She died there, they dont even know how,and her parents didn't even consent for her to go.See?
How I can trust in a church ever again?
I'm not saying that churches or temples, etc take all the money for selfish reasons, but when there are reasons to doubt...its very hard to let go of those reasons, to ignore them, and trust fully in what someone believes in.

'Just because some priests molested some kids' ???TRY 35,000 reported and proven cases (AND COUNTING) of actual intercourse rape!! And several thousand molestations!! Perhaps kids are garbage to you as long as taxes are paid and wine and wafers are bought etc... Wow your head is so far up your a** your keyboard must be up there too =))

I think the problems lie in the fact that the church needs more priests than there are ones who can live up to a life of celibacy.
So if the church really wants to alleviate this problem, they need to allow the priests to marry and maybe they'll stop taking their sexual frustrations out on the children!

How wrong a lot of the answers are, they will not believe anything you Or I have said and I have been trying for nine months to tell them that the Catholic Church is a good Church and the press only releases bad things about the Church and twist the story to suit them selves but they never say anything good about the Church

I am a Catholic and proud to be one and will continue to stand up for the Church

The Priest are human too that err. If there are few rotten apples in the bushel it does not mean that all the apples are rotten. Calm down it is not worth it to be angry with people who thrive and excited on bad news. Your explanation hit the spot.

"The money you donate does not go for the Catholic church to "cover up" the mistakes priests have made."
So where do they get the money to pay-off for their employees' mistakes?
It was rhetorical - of course the Sunday Plate takings pay for the misdeeds of child-abusing priests.

"they pay their bills and taxes"
Sorry - it's a well-known fact they pay NO taxes on contributions and definitely no Property Tax.

The money donated to ANY religious organisation goes into keeping the organisers in comfortable surroundings; nice clothes (they can even do some cross-dressing if they want), plenty to eat, a nice, warm, comfy bed and nice transport to go down to the shops in.

There's real good money to be made from Religion - Pushing it or Treating it - IF you can keep a straight face.

WHAT TAXES

You are forgetting the tax breaks churches get.

As for the rest of it, I think you will find the majority of those are paid for by collections from church goers .... not by the church itself.

But to turn your question back .... why do so many catholics try to sweep this abuse, which looks as though it used to be emdemic in the church, under the carpet.

EDIT: Wow, such ignorance shown in your additional details - The people abused didn't have to take the money.

1) The PRIESTS DIDN'T HAVE TO ABUSE THEM

2) The majority DID have to take it, statute of limitations had run out so criminal cases weren't possible.

EDIT 2: Did you actually READ my 1st edit - THEY CAN'T TAKE CRIMINAL ACTION AS THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS HAS RUN OUT - ALL THEY HAD OPEN TO THEM IS CIVIL ACTION - A CASE OF TAKE THE MONEY OR GET NOTHING

it's not just catholics, it is all Christians that I have issues with and with all due respect to your frustration, so many Christians on this forum have ridiculed me and denied my spiritual path even exists, and have treated me very shabbily indeed ( I'm a pagan and a Witch) so it is hard fo rme to be more sympathetic right now. In an ideal world, we would all get along and no one would ridicule another's path. I tried, it didn't work, so the hell with it.

You're right. The money donated goes toward paying out settlements for the cover ups of and disgusting child abuse perpetrated by church employees. Quit trying to soften child abuse by calling it 'mistakes'. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who continues to support this institution needs to have their head examined, IMO.

I don't know what disgusts me more, the actual cases of abuse or excusing it?

Child molestation is not a mistake.. It is a heinous crime..

Your defending Catholic priests is disgusting and disturbing..

The Catholic church protected priests who molested allowig them to continue working... often for decades..

Archdioceses are aming up fund raising to cover costs of abuse scandal pay outs..

http://www.boston.com/globe/spotlight/abuse/stories5/043004_fundraising.htm

Examine your stance the one you are taking now makes it seem you are glossing over what was done by calling it a mistake.. Forgetting to take out the trash on trashday, getting a math problem wrong on a test and calling someone by the wrong name are mistakes.. To call sexually abusing a child a mistake is like calling murder a mistake...
