I know that during The Reformation, a number of Protestant movements took place, creating people who were not following directly from The Vatican. I know there are Protestant christian religions, like Baptist, Mennonite, Evangelical, Anglican, Lutheran, ect.

I asked a few people what religion there family is, and some have responded "Protestant".

Is Protestant a specific denomination of Christianity? Is there a PROTESTANT CHURCH called just that: for example "First Protestant Church of Joesville" ? Or is the term Protestant simply a term for any Christian who is NOT Catholic - all the denominations of Christianity that fall under being not Catholic?

I ask this as a non-religious person interested in what the term "Protestant" can mean.

Thank you!

Generally the term protestant comes from the reformation movement led by Martin Luther. Today, protestants include:

Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, Episcopalians, Calvinists, Hugenots, Quakers, Anglicans, Mennonites, Amish, Pentacostalists, Presbyterians, etc.

Other non-Roman catholics christians (christ believers) include the following (which are not protestants): Greek Orthodox catholics, mormons, seventh day adventists, fundamental LDS, Heavens' Gate, etc.

You stated the answer early in your question. Protestant is an umbrella term which covers many non Catholic sects. There is no
The Protestant Church on any building, but Presbyterian, Baptist etc. These all fall under the term Protestant.

It is a general term for one of the 5 major divisions of Christianity , namely :

Roman Catholic
Eastern Orthodox
Oriental Orthodox
Anglican
Protestant

Most divisions of American's Christianity falls under Roman Catholic and Protestant.

For the British, the Anglican, Catholics and Protestant.

For the Asian it would be covering almost all the denominations.

The protestors against the rule of Rome and the pope actually sacked Rome with all the trimings including rape. Those people were called protestants by themselves and then by the resurgent Roman Catholic Church. Catholic and Protestants became the two largest branches of the Christian Church.

General term.

Basically the Protestants were the ones who got sick of always having red M&Ms, so one created green, another, yellow, another blue.

And now, we have so many pretty colors with our M&Ms.
But, guess what? It doesn't matter what color they are--they're still M&Ms and they all taste the same when you pop them in your mouth
