A few of you got the most important aspect....that being safety, but ALL of you missed the 2nd most important reason to go left.....that being handling.
With the driver sitting on the left side of the car, that makes the left side of the car heavier. If you put the heaviest side of the car to the inside of the corner, the car will transfer the weight to the other side, and corner better. If you start with the weight to the outside, you will overload the tires and possibly crash, but the car definitely NOT handle worth a darn.
If you guys notice during the road course events, the cars handle better in the left handed corners better than the right handed corners.
I know someone's gonna ***** about this answer, so I will add this bit of info before anyone does *****.........down under...NZ, Tasmania, and Australia.......They do run a mix of left and right drive race cars, or at least the do in what we call Late Models (Super Sedans I think it is). They pretty much run the same speed, but the handling is a bit better on the left drive cars. How do I know this? I was there..... Back in '89. Like they say....Been there, done that.

Its all about tradition... From the start of Nascar racing when they would race on the beaches of Daytona, all the cars went in the direction of counter clock wise... With all the success that Daytona had, many other tracks tried to duplicate this, and so they would have tracks made and they would do the same at the new tracks as they did the old ones.
Now days millions of boys/girls men/women all grow up driving on dirt tracks on Saturday night all going as fast as they can turning left...
So other than road courses, its just a snowball affect with all the ovals. It would be something different for all those drivers to go the other way. Turning right, all the drivers had to start from scratch learning their cars all over again... They would have to learn what a push felt like, and when their cars spin out, how to correct it... I dont look for it to happen, but thats not to say it wouldnt be fun to see! lol

NASCAR oval track has only left turns, because the drivers sit on that side of the car. The drivers generally try to keep to the inside of the track (because it is a shorter distance around the track) So by making all left turns, the drivers can better see what is going on around them.
Safety reasons also, keeps the driver away from the out side wall (guardrail in the old days).

In case you haven't noticed, races of all kinds are run counter clockwise. Nascar, Indy Racing League, Horse racing, track and field, etc. It's just the way it is. Except on road courses where they turn both left and right, and the races are run clockwise.

It's too dangerous to have the driver sit on the wall side of the track. I've heard that in countries with right hand drive vehicles they run clockwise on ovals. Anyone from the UK?

It's about how it all started and safety. The moonshine runners would challenge each other to see who's car was the fastest in farmers fields the big horse farm tracks and they have raced with the driver away from the wall from the beginning.
Personally I think there should be more road course tracks because it was based on moonshine runners and they traveled regular roads not just left hand turns

Because the driver's seat is on the left side of the car (we drive on the right side of the road). If it was based where they drive on the the left side of the road they would go clockwise instead.

Yeah, more road courses would be much more interesting. You need some actual talent to overtake in that case. I only watch 2 races per year and they are the road courses. Hopefully Nextel Cup goes to Montreal next year and they use a true F1 circuit. The Nascar fans would hate it though since there is no where to camp at the circuit.

They don't... At Sears Point they turn left and Right. Also stock car racing was done at small town tracks between moonshiners and just got bigger which is todays NASCAR.
