If your ancestors came primarily from England you could classify yourself as an Anglo American or an American of English descent. However, the term "British" also takes in the Welsh and the Scots, and the Scots will never let anyone forget that they aren't English!

Not if your family came here several generation ago, in which case you would be an American with British Ancestry.

Whats wrong with just being an American? Do we really need to separate ourselves from each other? Other countries don't do it, If you are born there then you are called accordingly. Most of the world is a big melting pot any way.
