You need to see a podiatrist, but in the mean time take ibuprofen for the pain and make sure the shoes you wear have plenty of arch support. Shin splints are often caused by improper support of your shoes. Also you may not be running properly, ask the doc or see a sports trainer to make sure you are putting your foot down properly.

Good luck, I know from experience how much they hurt. Once I changed my shoes to one with a good arch the pain went away.

Shin splints are the result of muscle imbalance. Strong calves, weak shin muscles. To prevent them, lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Slowly pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Hold for 1 or 2 seconds, then repeat. Try to work up to 2 or 3 sets of 10.

Good Luck

everyone always says ice them. i filled up a tub with ice water and could only take like 2 minutes of icing. it seriously felt worse than the actual shin splints. the only thing to do is to keep running, slow at first. try running on something soft like grass rather than pavement. also, do exercises to help strengthen the thin muscle on your shin (tibialis anterior) if it hurts too much to run, slow it down to a walk until you think you can run again. whatever you do, take it easy.

drink more water and get more calcium.. whether by milk products, or eating dark green veggies like spinach, etc.
also do some stretches before running, like standing with your toes on steps and lowering your heals downwards, then standing flat on ground, raising up on your tip toes.. then do lunges.. anything to stretch out those muscles before running.

Gotta ice them and lots of rest. It may take awhile to recover completely.
