In the city where I live we do have a ban on smoking in all public places. The Respiratory Therapist in me says it's a good thing, but the free spirit in me says it should be up to the individual business owner-if they want to allow smoking they can post it a smoking establishment and those who don't like it don't have to go there.

Smoking has been banned in pubs and clubs here in the UK for 17 days now. I agree that people shouldn't be forced to breathe in second-hand smoke but the law discriminates against people who do smoke and so is just as bad by giving NOBODY any choice. It should be up to individual venue owners to decide their policy then for the public to decide whether they should go to a smoking or smoke-free policied venue.
It futher annoys me that the goverment tells us how bad smoking is for us yet continues to enjoy enormous revenues from tobacco tax and the added bonus of smokers dying younger and not hanging around for years sapping state pension funds.
Sorry for the rant but I've not been able to enjoy a pint and ciggy for over two weeks!

smoking has been banned in Ohio since dec. I hang out with others that smoke and it is irritating that while playing a game a pool they have to go outside to smoke. I used to be around the smoke a lot more, but now that I am not around it much, I tend to get sick from it. Considering that bars didn't have separate spaces for smokers, I think that it is good that they did something, but I feel that the bar owners are missing out on some income. Since the ban, I know that I have not been to the bar much (due to my friends). We buy beer and hang out at home.

It is going to be banned in my state soon, but they already have a rule where at least one bar in all hotels and clubs must be non smoking and i think that is enough.
There are more smokers than non smokers who go to pubs anyway, you've been allowed to do it for years and the people who don't like it should go to the non smoking bar, or else put up with it like they have been for years and years.

Cigarette smoke kills a lot of people. Is it discrimination to force a non-smoking bar maid to inhale second hand smoke all night every night, possibly causing lung cancer?
I'm for banning all smoking inside public buildings. Go outside if you want to smoke!

Not at all. People still have to be allowed to practice wallet democracy. If people don't like smoking in a bar ,they will simply chose to drink in another bar. If enough people make that choice the bar owner may very well choose to change his policy regarding smoking to get his customers back.
I think that governments are exceeding their rightful bounds when they pass these kind of undemocratic laws.

no, these are places where people go to unwind and have fun. if people cant kick the bad habit of smoking they should at least be entitled to smoking areas.

also, my reasoning is that most people don't spend enough time in pubs and clubs to gain a dangerous amount of second hand exposure to the smoke.

at the very least it should be up to the owner
