The Chow Chow is usually well-mannered, but can be willful and protective. Bossy, serious and very independent. They are self-willed to the point of obstinacy. Often a one-person dog, very loyal to his family, though he may act reserved, even with them. If strangers push themselves on this dog, he may become aggressive. This very dominant breed requires a dominant owner. The owner of this breed of dog should be a calm person who is naturally fair and firm. With such a handler, the Chow Chow can develop well. Don't expect great obedience from them. They are born stubborn and with minds of their own. The dogs can learn because they are certainly not stupid, but they must see the point of your command. Be consistent at all times. Some experts claim the short-haired Chow is more active and learns faster than its longer-haired family member. One owner told me that their Chow can do tricks, and learns them quite easily at that.

Ok, despite the bad rap that chow chows as a breed received in the 1980's, chow chows are wonderful dogs. However, there are people still out there that do not breed for the correct temperament and health. There are a few ways to make ANY breed mean: 1) you get two mean dogs and breed them and you can get mean puppies, 2) you abuse the dog, 3) you do not properly socialize the dog. The chow is a breed that requires proper socialization throughout it's life. You cannot dump it in the backyard and expect it to be accepting of anyone that walks in the yard. If you take this breed out daily on walks and let it meet and greet people and other animals; AND if the dog was properly breed for the correct temperament, then you should have a wonderful companion. Please go to the AKC's website at http://www.akc.org and look up the chow chow's breed standard... make sure you look for all the desirable traits in the puppies as well as other relatives the breeder has on site. My oldest chow here is 11 years and my youngest is 7 wks. old, all 13 of my chows are well behaved and are great around strangers, other animals, and especially children. Male or female is really a personal preference. What you should be more interested in is coat type and coat care. Chow Chows come in a "rough" or "smooth" coat. The rough is longer hair and requires daily brushing or it will mat; the smooth has hair all over no longer than 1" in length. Both coat types are double coated, meaning that this breed has both an outer, coarser coat, and an inner, softer coat. Both coat types shed, and they usually "blow" coat twice a year or after a season in females. You can find out additional information at the national breed club site at http://www.chowclub.org/

A Chow-Chow isn't a dog, it's a very fluffy rat. Little yippy piddler, in my opinion: it will bark in that high pitch, "I'm not a real dog" howl, and it will probably growl at every stranger as if it could do anything to protect you, besides peeing on somebody.

Get a bigger dog. Also, get a mutt because:

A) There are many of them, and they therefore need your love more than a Chow-Chow would.
B) Because they are not purebred, they are not inbred, idiotic, and impossible to train because of their low intelligence. [A Chow-Chow has a tiny head and an even smaller brain.]

Whatever dog you get, get your dog fixed. It will cost money, yes, but it can save your new sweetheart female from the pointless agony of menstruation, and possibly help her avoid a potty problem (thereby saving you money on carpet cleaning services). Get your sweetheart male fixed because it's the right thing to do—stray and feral dogs pose a risk to the community (rabies, property damage, etc.)

Finally, rescue a dog that truly needs you, rather than going to a pet store or a private breeder. Animal control organizations are kill shelters, so their animals' days are limited. There are also rescue organizations that have dogs up for adoption, and they need good homes, too.

Personally, I know it's kitten season, and although a Chow-Chow might look the part, there's a lot of great kitty cats that want desperately to be your pet, because they are on death row for no reason other than existing.

Chows have gotten a bad rap in recent years because of their looks but in my opinion any breed can be mean if the owner does not train them properly. I have had the pleasure of interacting with a few Chows and they are very sweet dogs by nature but they are stubborn so proper training needs to be done from the very start. I am particular to the females only because I have had quite a few male ChowChows hump my leg and they are hard to get out of that habit.

the chow is a very advanced dog to own i HIGHLY recommend an experienced person to own them... i work around every breed of dog imaginable on a daily basis... and from my experience the chows "rap" isn't quite all untrue.... they are a bit more tempermental then most other breeds.... and have a snappy attitude.... alot of the times the most uncomfortable part about them is they don't let you know when they are through being bothered or not they just let you know with out a growl or anything... i would not recommend for a house hold with children or any other small animals they are mostly a one person dog... and they should be properly trained to avoid any out of order behaviour. They are a bit of a handful at first but eventually through extensive training they have the potential to be wonderful pes to you and you only....

My first dog was in three bad fights in his lifetime - and he was never one to initiate a fight. The dogs were a chow and two chow mixes. In my opinion the ones I've seen are too aggressive and too unpredictable. I think there's something a bit "off" with all those Japanese breeds (Chows, Sharpei, Akita, Tosa) since most of them have been bred for fighting.

They are very unpredictable. At every grooming salon I've ever worked at, it was mandatory the owner always stays with their Chow Chow in case the dog becomes aggressive. And they charge automatically $50 for a bath. That is the only breed of dog they do that with. I trust a Pit bull over a Chow Chow. I had one as a child and she was very aggressive with people she didn't know or anyone who wasn't related to us that entered our property. We tried taking her to a groomer and they could not even touch her. She was very protective of her family. She bit 2 people. One being a child that wasn't even aggravating her. All the kid did was walk past her and she bit him in the butt.

I think that chow chows can be wonderful dogs -- but they can also be difficult to handle. They probably aren't right for inexperienced dog owners. They also might not be the best dogs around other pets or kids.

Do more research before you decide. Good luck.

It's not a breed for a first time dog owner. They are very hard headed and can be hard to train. They also shed a lot. This is also a breed you need to well socialize. They can be a one man dog. They can be very sweet, it's just a breed that take a lot of work in many ways. Hope this helps, but it's just my opinion. Others may tell you it's the best breed to get. That's what makes the world go round....All the best;~}

i think that chow chows are very cute and i love the way their fur covers their face and their flat face and how they have different colored tongues and when they are sleeping the look so cute because they get all wrinkled up and their fur covers everything and they look so cute and i love them. and their not mean like people say they are the only thing that is ever mean is the people that train them or the people that cast them out on the street. i hate when dogs get blamed for peoples actions. and it depends on what you are females are supposed to like males better and visa versa but males are more calm and affectionate and females are more hyper and they like to jump up and play to show their love more.
