I have a verbal agreement with my gardener and have for almost 3 years. I pay him monthly - a certain amount - "rain or shine." If it rains, he doesn't cut the grass and I still pay. He comes on a weekly basis.

He recently left his bill behind with a little note that said "I'm going to take the 4th of July week off." I know he's going to want me to pay him the full amount for the month. Should I??

It may or may not be important to note that my wife and I get him a Christmas gift every year. It's not like we're slave drivers! But I was brought up under the mentality that you work for your money. Am I being a hard ***? Do I just pay t he guy the full amount.?

If he has been a good gardener for the last 3 years that you've been satisfied with, I would not hesitate for one second to give him a "paid vacation" with pay, after all, it's only one weekend in a span of 3 years. In fact, I would go one step further and tell him that, from now on, he may pick a time of year to take a "paid vacation" as long as he tells you in advance.

Don't be petty after having developed a good working relationship. Instead, recognize his work and treat him the way you expect to be treated. Don't you get paid vacations?

You'd be an absolute fool to make a big deal out of this as you run the risk of losing a valuable worker.

How is he, generally? Is he a GREAT gardener? Then maybe you don't want to make waves. Pay the guy -- it's a small price to pay for good help.

If he's a regular gardener, then discuss it with him. Ask him if he can come in a different day, or ask him how he wants you to handle the bill for that vacation day.

If he's a terrible gardener, here's your chance to get rid of him. Start interviewing new guys.

I think in general, it's best to discuss it calmly with him. Ask him (calmly) what will happen if a family event or other holiday falls on your day. If this is a one-off event, I'd let it slide, but if he's taking a holiday every month, you really need to decide if he's worth the money.

If your contractual agreement is a flat monthly fee rain or shine then so be it. Some gardners will still mow lawn in the rain (not Katrina type wheather obviously).

He will need to deal with twice the maintenance, lawn mowing, etc when he returns and not get additional money for extra work build up due to his absence. Hope he understands this as well.

Just pay him the full amount. Obviously you like his work since he's worked for you for 3 years.

Pay him half because it was a holiday and it will keep the waters calm between you all. Then talk with him about any time he wants to take off you won't be paying him. That way in advance he knows...
