Can evolution take place in modern time? Would humans evolve into a population with better vision or continue to be poor sighted if they did not have seeing eye glasses?

Time for the short answer: No, bad vision will not eradicate itself...not in our lifetimes...or until genetic manipulation is a widely accepted therapy (doubtful!).

Evolution takes place every single day...we won't see any changes, as it takes hundreds of thousands of years for any changes to be seen.

Who knows where the evolution of humans will go...there is no way to predict...for all I know, we could evolve into a race that uses sound, taste, smell, and touch, not to mention ESP to 'see'.

In our lifetime, poor vision for some is an inconvience that glasses, contacts, and refractive surgery will correct.

I don't really know about the second line or what you are talking about. But if you were to get contacts and your perscription was -.75 which means you are near sighted (you can't see far) then it isn't bad at all. That was me in like second grade. I am barely 18 and my vision is -6.25 thats pretty bad. I don't know really know what you are talking about. I do know that i see sharper with my contacts, and your eyes shouldn't strain, they should be completely comfortable. Maybe it gives you a headache or something in the beginning because your not use to the vision change?? I don't know, I don't remember... I am guessing the strain is because you need glasses and your eyes are trying to focus so you can read what is on the screen. Sorry I can't help more, good luck! Remember with a perfect prescription, you should be quite pleased and comfortable. And It seems like you would wear glasses all the time if you are near sighted because far sighted is + perscription. But i'm not the doctor.... i do know though with eyes you might need a second opinion. When i was little one guy told me i had a stigmatism and that was totally wrong, so I had to go to another before I found the perscription that worked.

I've often pondered this as well. However it would require people with poor vision to stop breeding. For most people thats a horrible thing to think about, but ti would be the best way to attempt to "evolve" human vision. That's how Natural Selection works. The best features in a race get bred more.

Evolution takes hundreds of thousands of years.
Unless people regulate breeding practices, the poor eyesight gene would continue to circulate.

So, I guess the answer is yes; with a lot of time and effort this could work.

Now what interests me is:
If wearing glasses that enhance your vision, over time, make your vision worse... Would wearing glasses that make your vision worse, over time, enhance your vision?

Poor vision is evident throughout history, yet correction of poor vision is only a few centuries old. Poor vision survived and would continue to florish even without correction.

No, it is heredity, but it has to do with the shape of the eyeball and not so much a survival of the fittest thing. It is a genetic trait. so, you would have to remove all the peole that have bad vision (about 2/3 of the population) and only let the good sighted people swim in the gene pool. It has nothing to do with if we had glasses or not.

No offense, but this question is retarded. There were people with bad sight before glasses were even within concept. It's a genetic mutation, not evolution. Most times its hereditary, so unless you kill all the people with bad sight, eradicating the problem is unlikely. Evolution in modern time? It's taking place at all times! Although it takes millions of years... Not just 50...

Even if poor vision COULD eradicate itself, how could you explain people who lose some or all of their sight in accidents?

No. If that were the case, we wouldn't have poor vision problems now. We would have evolved out of them during the years before we had options for vision correction.

Highly unlikely. Evolution works by favouring those traits that lead to greater reproductive success and disfavouring those traits that lead to poorer reproductive success.

Since refractive error has very little influence on the number of children someone has, evolution will not affect it.
