For starters, Wolpoff & Abramson is NOT a scammer. they are for REAL, and they are a BIG law firm which does collections for many of the 'majors' out there.
First, send them a certified letter, return receipt requested, with a copy of the letter they sent you, asking for verification of the debt they claim you owe. Do NOT let them intimidate you. They tend to be very aggressive in their practices.
Since they are nationwide, they may have contacted you in error, and the debt may belong to someone with the same or a very similar name as yours.
Demand written verification (copies with YOUR signature) that this debt is actually yours. Assuming that they will not be able to produce same, you then write them back with whatever they send you and inform them that the signature (or whatever) does not belong to you.
Keep copies of all your correspondence, and continue all correspondence certified mail, with return receipt requested.
If they persist unreasonably, then it is time to call LegalAid or similar for a nasty letter getting them off YOUR back. While you are at it, demand a letter from them indicating that NO blemish has been placed in your credit file due to THEIR error.

The site SCH listed is a pretty good credit discussion board.
There is also one that I have listed in my profile (the last link listed)
Both sites are totally free to use and have tons of info on them.
Send them a debt validation letter ASAP. If this is the first contact from them and you send a DV within the first 30 days after that contact, they must cease ALL collections until they validate.
NEVER speak to them on the phone, do everything in writing.
Never sign your name on the letters to them, only print your initials or type your name.
Always send your letters certified mail return receipt.
Order a paid copy of your reports from each CRA and look to see if they have placed anything on your reports.
If they have, when you receive the green card back from your DV mailing, send the CRA's disputes for the trade lines that were placed on your reports.
Check out the site that SCH mentioned or click on the last link I have listed in my profile and do some reading

the best thing to do is calling the firm, and tell them what the purchase was, date, and price. But you must do it soon, or they will think you are hidding. If you don't have a best buy credit card, them it might be a mistake and you might want to contact them anyways. Or contact Best Buy at:
1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289)
good luck and don't worry, if you don't owe anything you shouldn't be scared. Also if you bought your laptop with the credit card, and still have the payment receipt, look for it and have it close to you when you call. i know you can only make payments to credit card by check. so look for the receip or check #

contact the Better Business Bureau, it is probably a scam, when you reach the 'law office' they will want your SS#, tell em to bug off, get the name of who you speak to, the co. name and the phone number and address, send a letter of dispute and a copy with all the above inform. to Attorney General of your state., and the US Attorney General, wouldn't hurt to send it to the FBI fraud dept as well. Don't pay what you don't owe, and never give out personal information.

call a lawyer that has free consultations and they can tell you what to do. maybe even over the phone. the best buy may have had some identity theft cases and someone may have used your social security number or they got something mixed up so be sure to call a lawyer and see if you should call best buy or not. good luck

Get a lawyer to call them for you if you're worried.
Though if it's not something you're responsible for just call them and ask them what it's about, because it could just be a misunderstanding.
Otherwise getting a lawyer may save you some grief.

You need to request a debt validation. If they cannot provide the exact nature of the debt then it is not valid. I found this great website that discusses it at lenght...check it out...
