NEVER feed Science Diet, Purina, or Iams.
Look into Innova, Canidae (I highly recommend it), Wellness, Artemis and California Natural.
Read "Foods Pets Die For" by Ann N. Martin for all the gruesome details. Poor quality foods are actually HARMING pets!!!

Believe it or not, most vets get paid to reccommend Science Diet, but it's really no better then no-name. It's the same with Pedigree, Iams, Eukanuba, Kibbles & Bits, Purina & so on.
Some good foods are Innova, Innova EVO, Wellness, Canidae, Solid Gold, Timberwolf Organics, Orijen, Artemis, GO Naturals, Natures Variety, Solid Gold, California Naturals, Fromms, Chicken Soup, Merrick, Solid Gold and Wysong. Hopefully your local pet store will carry one of these brands.

Science diet is bad. It has corn meal, chicken meal, fillers, by poducts and all the other bad stuff in it. If you want your puppy to live a long happy life I suggest holistic dog food. I feed my dog Merrick dog food. They have a puppy dog food, and a senior dog food, along with a few different flavors for the adults. My dog's allergies cleared up the second I switched to this food, also, his coat and skin is so much healthier. Other holistic dog foods are Timber Wolf and Eagle Pack, along with a few others. These are suppose to be good as well, but I've never tried them, so I can't suggest them to you. This is the Merrick Dog Food website:
http://www.merrickpetcare.com/
They have canned cat food, but are coming out with dry food by the end of the year if you have cats! Good luck with your new puppy and thank you for being responsible enough to ask about healthy dog food. Also, there is a store locater link on the website so that you can search for stores that carry Merrick Pet supplies in your area. It is about $10 cheaper in the stores, but if you order online it's made fresh for you. I buy from the store because I'm 16 and don't have a credit card, but the second I get one, online is the way I'm going. I want the best for my baby!! Have fun with your puppy!! Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Stay clear of store brand foods such as Science Diet, Pedigree, Purina, IAMS/Eukanuba, etc..they are loaded with cheap fillers and by products.
Some good choices of quality meat based foods:
Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Innova, Merrick, Fromm just to name a few.
*****Vets do NOT get paid to endorse or sell Science Diet!!!! Vets MUST pay wholesale prices for this food just as any other pet business that sells food..Actually most vets must pay a HIGHER wholesale price to buy it then pet stores do because they don't sell it in as large a volumne..The only money vets get from the sale of Science Diet is the difference between the wholesale price they buy it for and the retail price they sell it for********

I would recommend Blue Buffalo, which is an organic food. My dogs ate Eukanuba for years and were happy and healthy, but then I began educating myself more about dog food. Foods such as Blue Buffalo (which you can find at PetsMart) have much higher quality ingredients. I have seen a huge difference in my dogs' coats. One of mine had minor skin allergies that have all disappeared since I switched to Blue Buffalo. They eat the lamb & rice dry variety. Good luck with your pup! You are smart to be so conscientious with the food, it makes a difference!

I have to agree that anything you can buy in the grocery store is going to be poor quality. Look for a food with meat as the first ingredient and NO CORN. Corn is used as a filler and offers no nutritional value to your dog. Science Diet is not considered a premium food.
Please look at the reviews on this website. Hundreds of foods are rated and it tells you what's good and what's not good about each brand.

I feed TimberWolf Organic and Merrick wet food, with a table spoon of yogurt in the morning for the bacteria

But they I love my dogs and want the to live long healthy lives which is why I will not touch IAMS, Science Diet, Pro Plan, or any of those inferior food. But to each his own.

Vets actually get payed by Science Diet to endorse their product. Vets get very little if any nutritional training.
I recommend feeding a food like Innova, Canidae, Wellness and similar brands. Any foods you can buy at a grocery store are about as nutritious as the bags they come in.

This is a hot topic tonight!
I would never recommend "Science Death" to anyone. Again, look at the ingredients after you've looked at some of these sites:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com
and
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/
to learn a little bit about the subject.

Homemade. I use this book to make dog food for my dog:
http://www.amazon.com/Good-Food-Cookbook-Dogs-Home-Cooked/dp/1592530672
I have adjusted the recipes to be 3-4x the meat amount in ALL "stew" recipes as I had been feeding my dog a raw food diet before this. (For example, it calls for 1lb ground beef, so I will use 3.5lb ground beef in that recipe) He went off the raw food diet because he began refusing to eat ANYTHING. Something obviously in the raw food made him sick, but the practically pure protein had made him strong and healthy before he went off it.
