Don't get me wrong- I'm not shallow and wouldn't break up with a guy for this. Nor do I want to change who he is or make him uncomfortable. However, my boyfriend ALWAYS wears t-shirts and jeans/shorts. ALWAYS. Even when we go on dates or to nicer things (like a musical) he wears t-shirts (with a hoodie if it's cold). Never a long sleeve shirt. Never a polo shirt. It drives me nuts! I dress up for him when we go on dates, but he never dresses up for me. How do I tell him I want him to...well...look nicer?

You don't tell him to dress nicer... you ditch him and find a guy that ALREADY dresses nicer! Honestly, men never, ever, ever change. If he won't take the trouble to look good for you now, while you are just dating, can you imagine what he will look like after a few years of marriage? It's time to dump the chump and step up to a higher quality guy.

Tell him so. The art of dealing with the situation is not to confrot him about it~ but to "communicate" your feelings to him about it. Sit down with him. Tell him you'd like him to dress better, not because you think clothing make the person, but because the clothing he puts on around you ~ makes you feel like cares or doesn't care to impress you. Let him know it can hurt when he doesn't care how looks around you~ and that you are even willing to compromise at times~ but you'd appreciate more of an effort. The more effort he puts in the more rewarded HE will be! Women tend to react to a man who appreciates them, and who makes them feel like they are worth it. In the end you'll end up treating him better. Let him know its a win-win-situation.

Oh go gently on this one.... pile on the praises that you love him as is and keep suggesting clothing items that you think would look good on him when he wears them (if he has that item already) or when you're out shopping. (hey, that would look good in you... bet you'd look hot in that one...you get the picture) don't take too serious a tone with this one because you know how fragile their egos are. Lotsa reward when he gets something right.

I think the best way to do this is go to the mall or somewhere else where they have nice clothes. When you pass by some nice clothes that you'd like him to wear, suggest them to him. Easy yet effective.

Tell him to dress nicer, and suggest some stuff?

You can always pull the old trick where you buy him the nice clothes. Maybe he'll get the hint.
