If God exists/existed, I doubt it would have a human gender. Wouldn't that be simply pointless? And the implications of being a certain sex...

If you believe god is male (or female), do you think 'he' would have to have the neceassary chromosomes...or merely the sexual organs?

Just wondering...it makes no sense. But most beliefs don't, so why am I surprised?

has anyone read '1984?'. Most of the people who believe god is male use 'double think'. I don't believe god is a 'spirit', or specifically 'male' or 'female'. God would have to be EVERYTHING if it in indeed could be called God.

dopper: Does God refer to himself as male...or has man when writing about god, presented him that way?

Justin: Once more, this is what has been written about god. It does not give substantial evidence that god is infact male. In fact, god being male makes no sense...unless there is also some female god...or...god is gay.

Gabriel: You've stummbled across an interesting point about the english language. It's strange that sometimes we can use the word 'man' to mean both 'man kind' (i.e. that's one small step for man) and the male gender (he is a man).

Therefore, the phrase 'God made 'man' in his own image' is ambiguous.

Also, the extent of the 'image' of god...Are you saying that a defining factor of god is the has a penis? Well, thats the basic difference between man and woman.

God is referred to as a man because historically men have dominated most aspects of life including religion. You are correct. God has no gender that is a human quality. Once again, we are creating God in our image.

Actually according to the Vedas which are the science of God,- God does have a gender. He is Parusha (the supreme enjoyer-in a spiritual male form and Jiva souls are the enjoyed, and feminine in quality His Supremely Beautiful Spiritual Body is completely described in the Vedas and His body is not made of any material elements including DNA. He can see with his ears and eat with His eyes. He can do anything with any part of His Body. He has an eternal consort and she is the Supreme Goddess. They are inseparable though they are two separated parts on the same whole. They separate themselves to enjoy unlimited eternal loving pass times. This is the actual science of God and you can read in The Bhagavad Gita as it is BY Bhaktivedatna Prabhupa asitis.com you can read on line.

I don't think people "cling" to the notion of God as male, necessarily. Think about when the concept of God originated - in a time when males dominated society. Naturally, because people lived in patriarchal communities, God was personified as a male (the then superior gender).

Clearly, views regarding gender roles have evolved over the years, but I tend to think that people continue to refer to God as a "he" out of mere habit more than anything else. For example, my religion always refers to God as a "he" just because that's tradition - the way we've always said it. We don't really give it much thought because God's gender (if God HAS a gender) is certainly not the most important feature/facet of his/her being: I prefer to focus on God's kindness, mercy, forgiveness, and awesome power as opposed to "Gee, I wonder if God is a man or woman...?"

Hope that provides some insight.

Well it does say in the Bible that "man" was created in "His own image" (God that is). And who was the first person created? Yup, Adam. Also, in the at the beginnig of the book of Genesis, as man was created in the image of God, God says "let us, create man into our own image". "Let us", that speaking of the trinity, which means that all three are there creating man, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Which brings us to the conclusion that by that statement sheds light on the sex of God. We know that Jesus was a male, no doubt about that, and He was one of the "let us" images that man was made of.

I agree with Gabriel. And really, what does it matter? I accept the entire Word of God as truth and part of that truth is that Jesus is male and showed us God on earth. Not everything will make sense to our finite minds, but someday, we'll get the chance to learn more and more for eternity in heaven if we belong to the Lord!! God bless

In the bible the husband is to be over his wife, not has a dictator but has a servant. And the wife is to submit to her husband. One is not better than the other but each has their role to play so to speak.
God is over all mankind & because man is to be over woman I guess this is why God is seen as a male. (this is only a guess). Of course the truth is God is neither male or female because God is not flesh & blood but Spirit.

In ancient Judaism God is actually portayed as a dualistic God, both male and female. The female represented Mother Earth basically.

It's chauvanist male leaders who have brainwashed the "He" concept into people over time.

The Bible calls Him and "He" and the Father... And if you don't believe in the Bible, then I guess it doesn't matter. And, I don't believe a spirit has needs for sexual organs... However, Jesus was/is God and he was a male... and that was God's flesh form.

God has no gender. God is everything to everyone. Christan thought has embedded itself so deep into our society that God has become "genderized" as a male entity because that is the doctrine of the Christians says...not that it is correct.

Before coming to any conclusion about the God/Almighty it is necessary to know about the self. We are the Soul, i.e. the Master controller of our physical body(made of 5 elements). As we have the father of our physical body , we too have our father of the soul who is known as the supreme soul/God.Thus God does not have his own ph. body/certain sex.
