There are two ways to treat ingrown toenail and those would be personal care or even surgery. Ingrown toenail is serious if not treated and can lead to infection which could cause you to walk with a limp. It depends on the condition of the toe; if it is mild then you should soak your foot daily in a mixture of warm water, Epsom salts, and over the counter antiseptic. This may help the tail to grow out rather than in. If it is more serious, surgery will be need where a surgeon will remove the offending piece of the nail. If you think that this is what you have you should have a visit to a podriatrist and get their opinion on what you should do. Good luck!

this is going to be weird as to how i know this, but it works.

first off...it does sound like an ingrown toenail. they are caused by the main reason it is ingrown is because the toenails were most likely rounded off on the sides when you cut them so now they've started to form that shape into the toes. to get rid of this...have your toenail grow a bit so you can cut it, and then in the center of the nail with a clipper, cut a triangle shape out of the nail, and leave the rest. the part of the nail that has grown into the toe on both sides will start to come together in the middle of the nail to fill in the gap. and to make sure it doesn't happen again, cut your nails straight across and to not try to round them off at the corners.

Had one and got one!!! It looks very reddish on the skin, beside the nail, extremely tender to touch and may even bleed if you accidentally bump it!! The only cure is a visit to the Podiatrist, who works wonders. It didn't even hurt when he removed the actual ingrown nail part and the pain went instantly. Well worth the visit and if the problem persists they can do a small operation to deaden that part of the nail in the base, so that it doesn't happen again.
