I'm going to be moving to NYC for school and I want to know if there are any affordable neighborhoods in the Manhattan area that are decent but affordable for people 18-19 yrs old. Harlem is one of the areas I'm considering so would this be a good neighborhood?

I also would like to add that the school I want to go to is located on 34th and Broadway in Manhattan so I would prefer to be close to Manhattan.

lol - Harlem is no longer that affordable. At your age, a roommate situation is probably best and don't foreclose Brooklyn. That's real New York! Manhattan, nothing is really affordable but the Lower East Side might be the one place. Also, it depends where you will be working or going to school, you have to figure your subways and commute time when searching for an apartment. craigslist.org has a very active board for renting apartments. good luck and have fun!

As far as Manhattan goes you are going to get ripped off majorly. Housing is ridiculously expensive. I am also a student and live in the Bronx right near Fordham University and the area is actually not bad. The housing prices are high but you get a decent sized apartment for your money. In Manhattan you will be spending about $2000-3000 for a small studio.

Harlem is not entirely bad. I'm sure there are bad sections just as there are everywhere else. I know people who go to Fordham that live in Harlem now. I highly recommend going to take a look at an apartment AND its neighborhood and seeing how you feel before you make any decisions.

Affordable and Manhattan is like saying healthy and fast food restaurant. Doesn't mix. As far as Harlem, it's a safer neighborhood now than it was 20 years ago, but folks there are sensitive to any gentrification of their neighborhood so you will always be considered an outsider there. Try Brooklyn or Queens less expensive.

Harlem is "up and coming" ie still pretty dangerous making the cost of living lower. They are trying to clean the place up. If you have "street smarts" and a big dog then i would say go for it, just be careful. I recommend Brooklyn, right over the bridge, as its less expensive and Manhattan is only about 20 minutes to 45 minutes away using public trans. Also if you have never lived in a big city environment, Brooklyn still has the city aspect, but its mroe of a neighborhood feel. Good luck!!

No neighborhoods in Manhattan are considered affordable. You could try Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx and it's going to be less expensive. Just use the subway it's not a big deal to use to the subway. I know the city inside and out so if you need any information on the city let me know.

The only people who can afford decent areas anymore in this city are Eurotrash and trust-fund babies. No seriously for the most part the city rents are just stupid but do some searching and you'll find a deal. It just takes time. Check out Brooklyn too, more for your money and lots of areas the commutes are faster than actually living in the city. I used to live in Spanish Harlem, now in BK cut my commute to work by 50 minutes! Check out all the neighborhoods find one that suits you. Never forget, so many kids come to New York and think its all fun and games, just remember to always be aware of your surroundings and you will be fine. Its the greatest city in world and has a lot to offer.

Harlem is a great neighborhood, and is becoming very comfortable for college kids.

you might also want to check out the South Bronx (which isn't very far away from Harlem).

if you really want to save $$, you should look in close neighborhoods in Queens (like Sunnyside, Long Island City, or Astoria) or in Brooklyn. Subway rides are as short as 30 minutes, and it can save you hundreds of dollars in rent per month, just for a couple extra minutes on the subway.

i always recommend that you call up the school's housing office for tips on neighborhoods or apartments for rent by graduating students.

I grew up and still live in Washington Heights and have no complaints. My boyfriend and I pay $1300 for a 1-bedroom. It's clean and it's safe. Most people in the surrounding area are Columbia University med-students or doctors and the rest are families. There's a pretty good mix of races so it's easy to fit in. Try craigslist.org, they have a pretty good apartment rental section. Good luck!

You will get rip off in Manhattan because of high rent. Harlem is so so.

Harlem is better than what it used to be like, but I wouldn't live there. There are no decent, affordable places to live in Manhattan. Try New Jersey.
