Bass guitar strings are much more expensive than regular guitar strings and they should be. A lot more material goes into them and they last a lot longer. Many stores refuse to stock individual strings, so you end up buying sets unless you buy strings in bulk (not as cost effective for bass guitar) or buy online or by mail order. Changing a string usually takes less than ten minutes, but a shop will usually charge between $5.00 - $15.00 (plus the price of the string/strings) claiming that they need to clean the guitar and adjust the action. The bottom line is that they have to pay someone to be there to repair the guitar and they have to pay him or her whether they are actively doing repairs or not. They will usually double as sales staff anyway, or they will do repairs for several stores in the area, but it is still going to cost more than the job is normally worth.

Basically, changing a string consists of paying attention to the way the old string is placed on the instrument when you take it off, and replacing it in the same manner when you put it on. I would recommend that you insist that the shop or person that sold it to you, show you how to do it. If they refuse, (remember that they did and never give them any of your business again) then get a friend or teacher to do it with you the first time. Some shops will show you how to do it while they are charging you, and luthiers are usually even more willing to do this since they want to get you into their shop and eventually win you over as a customer (you can't imagine how your instrument can feel like a whole new miracle after a good fret job and neck adjustment!)

You can also find instructions online, especially if you put the make and model number of the bass you own into the search criteria. If it is a copy, put in the name of the instrument it was copied from, and don't be afraid to look at a couple of sites if the bridge or peg winders don't quite match up with what you've got. Hope this helps.

I should suggest you change it yourself. You save a tons more money doing it yourself! Trust me, atleast $30+ would save you more, and the gas to the local musican's shop or going to Wal-Mart if you have one like the "super" wal-mart's you can take a peek of what they have.
I had to do the same to an "ex", he "was" an inspiring worthless musican that couldn't play worth nothing! Keep up yoru dreams because I think you could play great! Have a great night!

well you cant fix one, you would have to replace it, and it might be a good idea to go ahead and change all 4, you can usually find a set for approx. 25 bucks.
