Cat food is higher in protein than dog food. It is also not good for dogs for that reason. As for the cans, she can get a serious cut or get her snout stuck in a can. This is dangerous. You either need to put the trash can away where she can't get into it or get a can with a locking lid on it. Hide the cat's food where the dog can't reach it...behind something or shut the door to the room the cat eats in. Incidentally, she will also eat the "turdles" out of the litter box so be wary of the kisses she gives you!

Eating cat food probably won't hurt your dog, though it's best that he doesn't eat it all the time. Cats and dogs require different diets. Cats are pure carnivores, meaning they typically eat nothing but meat, while dogs are omnivorous, meaning that they eat some plant materials along with their meat.
Cat diets are made primarily of meat and meat products, so in the long run they can be too rich for dogs and can cause digestive problems. They are also denser in calories than dog diets, so they can lead to obesity in dogs. Because of the additional fat and calories, cat food often tastes better to dogs than dog food does, so you may have to keep an eye on your dog to make sure he doesn't indulge in the kitty kibbles.
By the way, while cat food is generally okay for dogs, dog diets lack essential nutrients that cats need to stay healthy, so cats can't live on dog food. Overall, it's safest to feed your pets the kind of food formulated to be healthiest for their specific species. (Ferrets may be the exception. They are the only pets other than cats that are entirely carnivorous, which is why ferrets can live on cat food.)

Labs are so food-driven, it's crazy. Now that your dog has demonstrated that for you, it's time for you to look into ways to really secure your garbage. She's figured out how to "liberate" the cans - and as I'm sure you can see, you cannot predict what might be next. Be safe and protect your dog from food and other things that might kill her.

Manufacturers put extreme fish odors into cat-food.
Labradors, & most dogs, have very sensitive noses.
You'll have to be much more careful about this.
Feed the cat somewhere the dog can't get to.
Carefully wash the cans before 'recycling' them.

a suggestion would be to feed the cats and while they are eating, take the dog for a walk...this will help burn some of his nervous energy so he is calmer when returning home, if he has too much energy and needs to burn it off he will look for excuses like securing a food source to burn off some of the energy but since he doesn't have to work for the food it doesnt work so take him for a walk every day but the best time would be when the cats are eating.....cat food is higher in fat since cats dont need alot of protein for muscles so it probly tastes better than dog food....good luck!

Don't have an answer to why she does this except that dogs seem to likethe flavor better. I DO know you must stop her. Cats do not produce their own taurine, (an enzyme), and dogs do. Taurine is added to cat food, and if dogs eat it, they get too much taurine, and it can cause liver failure. Might want to toss the empties directly outside.

Find a way to keep it away from her. Cat food has way too much protein in it for dogs.

dogs like almost anything to eat but obbsessed with it? sounds like you need to dog proof your trash cans and maybe watch you cat while she eats and if you catch your dog eating cat food yell at her but keep in mind that dogs memorys are very short so don't get too angry at her
