I usually use it when a credit card activation ask my to hit the pound key.....and also when using a calling card...you need to hit the pound key....so you can call several ppl on one pin-number entry!!

So this is leftovers. The long ago original touch-pad also had and A, B, C, an D key. These were not common at all. Because the star and pound symbol used the DTMF(dual tone multi frequency) frequencies already present for the 1 and 3 column and the "zero" row those keys were kept for future "features." Well now that future arrived a long time ago so those keys have taken on all manner of different assigned functions on both phones and phone equipment accessories. **78 makes my answering machine play back messages as on example. For text messages, phones manufacturers assign punctuation and other stuff. Sometimes those keys are used for programming a programmable phone. Because those keys are not used in telephone calling, they get all kinds of secondary assignments.
