Yes. It's in the middle of the Nellis Ranges, which are due north from Las Vegas and the main reason why you will never fly directly north from an airport in LV or approach LV from the north. Large ranges such as this are broken up into separate areas, which enables several sets of military aircraft to use the same chunk of sky while remaining safely deconflicted from one another. The USAF conducts Red Flag exercises there several times each year. Each smaller chunk of sky will have a number designator. The chunk of sky that the installation in question sits right in the middle of is range 51, hence the name Area 51. The proper name is R4808N, reflecting it's status as a resticted area. Area 51 sounds better in a late night sound bite, though. It's an otherwise boring little box on a radar scope that even military aircraft without special clearance are forbidden to fly over. You can't even direct active or passive sensors into Area 51 unless you want to get debriefed by the goon squad. I don't know what's there, but I'm pretty sure it houses the world's largest magnet for freaks, wierdos, conspiracy theorists and overly enthusiastic users of recreational drugs.

Yes but recent rumors state that the major secret work has been moved to another base/area due to the publicity that has been going on around there. It's still active, but the focus has changed.
Just my opinion, but people should stay out of some of the government operations. I was in the military and worked for a space and defense contractor afterwards. We are doing wonderful, exciting work out there that needs to stay secret. Just because you don't know what's going on, doesn't mean it's bad. How are we going to stay #1 in the space and defense world if we give away all the secrets?

It does exist. I've seen the outside of it. It is smack dab in the middle of the biggest county in Nevada. Nye county. Pleanty of open space in the middle of the dessert where nobody actually lives. For that reason, it is perfect for the military to train and test new aircraft etc there.

it most definently does exist. it is THE MOST secure and secretive installation on the planet. airspace is restricted to military aircraft only. You cannot get close enough to even see the base without the MP's coming for you. What goes on there is beyond me but i bet it has something to do with advanced weapons research among other things.

In the movie Stripes Bill Murray had a line that fits:
"That's a fact Jack!!"
Where do you think all those airplanes with no markings go to from Las Vegas every day?
Want to get noticed? Try hanging out around that terminal. Hire an attorney before you do that. They ain't gots no sense of humor!!!

It does exist. What is worthy to note is that it has been said that nine different countries work together in there.
That would pose a big question wouldn't it? Why so many different countries on American soil working together when it should just be Americans?

There is proof it exsists president clinton signed a bill while he was in office confirming the exsistence of the base but no one knows what actually goes on there. No I dont believe there are any unusual things there besides normal military weapon testing.

I am not a conspiracy nut but every morning from Las Vegas airport, six 737s leave from a highly guarded but unmarked terminal at six am and return at seven pm. They do not study aliens but work on creating aircraft including those with hypersonic capabiities and better stealth capabilities

the confidentiality agreement you speak of was signed back in the 60-70.s ? well back then don't quote me on this but I think that was only a ten year contract :P
never the less they take what is there very seriously and will shoot you on sight if you pass the designated border zones.
My uncle that past away long ago used to be employed there and told tales to us about what was there in his days. pretty freaky stuff.
