don't overlook Hyundai... their cars look pretty cool, they are really cheap, and recently have been kicking the pants off of a ton of other cars in the ratings. Toyotas retain their value well, so do Hondas. I hate any car thats not American made (I know Toyota has plants in America... but its not an American car), or German cars. Volkswagen has some solid vehicles in their lineup- nothing really sporty, but their turbo diesel engines pack a punch with great gas mileage too.

New or used? How big? How many passengers? What style- sport, sedan, SUV, truck? Ford Fusion/ Mercury Milan/ Ford Focus/Ford Escape/ Mercury Mariner might work for new depending on current rebates, for example. They are rated really well by the Consumer magazines. Do you want to finance at all? Used there are too many options to even make a guess. I would spend some time looking on line possibly first to get an idea of the style/ size you want and then go to a dealership of that brand and have a quick glance. A best price dealership where there is no hassle or haggle might be a good source of bottom line pricing. Rebates vary by zip code with Ford so you might actually have to drive a few to determine what fits your payment and needs properly.

Chevy Cobalt SS
Pontiac G5
Honda Civic (good resale value)
VW Rabbit
Toyota Solara
there arent' too many 2-door coupes that are truly sporty with a good resale value. Honda most likely will give you the best resale and ive heard the Chevy is a great perfomance vehicle if you get the SS supercharged model.

Ford Mustang is the best bang for your buck. It has been rated the sportiest sports car of the year and very good quality in its class from JD Powers and Associates. It has a cool interior too. Check out the specs, pictures, comparisons, ect. http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/mustang/

Mazda MX-5 might be a good choice. There are other models, depending on what you are loooking for in a car.
With 20K you should have a wide selection of choices. good luck.
