It is indeed unhygienic. One can easily say that in the dry season everything you touch in India is covered in dried excrement. A reason to wash your hands repeatedly, if you find clean water.
I can assure you that all these poor people in India would prefer to have a normal, hygienic and private toilet.
Many of these people try to do it in the night because the darkness gives them some cover.
It is one of the biggest scandals of our time that a country like India (second biggest military navy of the world, nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles) has deliberately chosen to keep about a third of its population in dire poverty in order to keep salaries low. And I have not met one Indian with whom I dicscussed politics who did not use the term "biggest democracy in the world". My answer is usually that I would not even consider buying a vacuum cleaner from somebody who makes such claims.
The wealth displayed by some of the rich Indians is so out of touch that the leaders of the Sikh community are thinking of prescribing guidelines to curb the excesses at wedding parties. Sikh weddings are very famous for the shocking carelesness by which money is spent.
It is flabbergasting that the hypocritical moralists who take offence at a public kiss, seem not to give a (yes) about the conditions in which millions of their compatriots have to live.
I wish all the poor people of India a fine day. To the rich I would say: you have something dirty on your left shoe.

The excretion ferments more in
letrine tanks and releases UNHYGENIC gases; in the open air
it just gets dried. Since thousands of
years, our traditions guided us on
this hygene principle. Youngsters
do not understand the scientific
principle invented and developed in
ancient India.

There is a joke about this excreation
attitude. During British Raj time,
some one asked what is the
major difference in the eating habits
of Indians and the British. One person gave this answer: "Food
is connected with spirituality for
Indians according to the saying
Annam Para Brahma Swarupam.
Indians eat food inside their houses
and do the excretions out side.
The British do the reverse".
Excretions are connected with Sani
- static electricity. When you know
it, then you will understand who
is better.

Yes it is very unhygienic but it is very common and not as unapproved. Try to be sensible. Green House Gases caused by people pooping in India? That is highly irrelevant and not sensible. Also India has a high poverty level so you have to be considerate. Maybe we should help India to feed, clothe, shelter, and medicate them. This is real sad and makes me feel unassured about the future of the world. Have a nice day and try to help another human being.

Well, I didn't know that. Um, maybe someone with knowledge on this can comment on that part.
What I do know is that some Indians did seem to take the kiss too seriously when they started burning pictures of the actors and stomping on their faces. That was a bit uncalled for.
However, Richard Gere's kiss was a bit uncalled for, as well. For one, he was all over that young girl, and for what reason? Seems like he was turned on by her or something. Two, he should have been a bit more respectful considering he was in someone else's country and smushing his face all over one of their actresses. And three, some men, especially actors, just think women don't mind being kissed by them. Who says she wanted to be grabbed and kissed all over her face and neck by some older man she doesn't know?
But anyway, I'd love to go to India, poopie or no poopie : )

I think that what is considered appropriate or not in public from an etiquette point of view is based on the cultural norms and beliefs of the area that the actions take place. It is not fair to judge the norms of India or for India to judge the norms of North America.
I do not think people defecating in public is going to hurt the environment anymore than all the horrible pollution we cause in the Western world.Actually I would be indoor plumbing causes more environmental problems for the earth.

Hey if you are walking down one of the High Streets in India and you decide to drop a log; do you have to walk everywhere with a toilet roll in hand? Or do you just grab an old copy of The Sun off the street or maybe use a stray cat.

actually there are places in the usa and plenty of other countries you can do that as well - everybody defecates, it is a necessary biological function, really what is there to be upset over it being public...now where it is is another story...like ruining the beaches for instance...obscene now, environmentally unsound - often

Defecating is neither obscene or unhygienic but absolutely essential. It is unfortunate that so many in India have the defecate in public but it is absolutely natural. You do it so I don't know why you are getting so upset about it.

The poverty in India and fate of people who cannot afford a roof or proper clothing is amply compensated by God with the beautifful landscape, mountains and a rich heritage.
I welcome you to come and see it yourself. We do have people who have never seen electricity leave alone computers, but, who have a very rich heritage and culture. I think you are wrongly informed about India
