Using the Bible to prove god's existence is only valid if we already accept that it alone contains god's words.

But there is no evidence of this.

I did not claim that Bible did not contain "truths", I am stating that it is not the only holy book to contain "truths".

So which one is valid?

And although, christian's today, claim the authors were divinely inspired.

The authors themselves, never make that claim. In fact Luke, clearly states, that other's were writing about Jesus' life, so he decided to do it as well.

No mention of God speaking to him. You would think they would mention this, wouldn't you?

If the Bible contains some historically accurate information, so do the sacred scriptures of most religions. The Holy Koran, the mahabharata and Jain scriptures are all filled with topographically and historically correct information. Some sacred scriptures even contain geologically correct data. The Swayambhu Purana says tha tKathmandu Valley used to be a lake until the Bodhisattva Manjusri cut the mountains with a sword and let the water out. Amazingly, geologists have now proved that Kathmandu Valley was a lake during the Pleistocene period and that all the water eventually drained out through the Chobar Gorge.

The Buddhist scriptures als ocontain a great deal of information that has been verified by archaeologists.

Historical references, does not make the Bible anymore true than the other holy books.

Exactly. But usually when you ask this you'll get an answer like Michelle's below, that doen't really make any sense, and is not argument- they just reiterate their point "but...it is God's word!"

What makes the Bible apart from other holy books - it is because its prophecies has been fullfilled and many is still coming.
One of those is the return of the State of Israel, after almost 2,000 years of dispora. 1948 it has returned and despite many enemies. It has overcome its foes, until today, as the Bible foretold.
It has already said that the earth is circle, that there are mountain in the sea. That the winds current at circling the earth. The water cycle.
at lot of more.
Living according to the guidelines set by Jesus and the apostles, makes our personal lives fullfilling and happy. Full of hope and perseverance.

It is easy to refute other holy books, because they contradict themselves and the history of humankind( just look at the book of Mormon)

The two parts of the OT and NT are so interlinked and make so much sense combined with history and a true study of them.I understand that it is hard to understand how God could have inspired the Bible as it's author. However, before dismissing it, I would suggest an in depth study of the links between the OT and NT( or else it does not make sense and seems contradictory).
The history the Bible represents and the fact that it has remained after over 6000 years( some parts) is quite incredible when you think of all the civilizations that have fallen since then.

it's like i've said before, the best way to look at it is this: ya gotta treat mythology like mythology.

the bible, like many other religious books, does have some good lessons to be learned in it.

but so does grimm's fairy tales.

i know i come off as condescending, but i can't really help it.
aside from the the deaths of the black plague, a vast majority of the un-natural deaths in recorded history have been from religion. be it religion fighting religion, religion persecuting religion, or religion persecuting a lack of religion.

dont get me wrong.
a litlle spirituality is probably a good thing.
but i have a very well grounded fear in any institution that is convinced that it is absolutely right, and isn't historically squeamish about sending thousands to die trying to prove it's point.

and my point is....

you're right to have your doubts about something that has no basis in fact, and having these doubts is a big step in realizing that a bunch of dudes from 2000 years ago probably shouldn't be telling you how to live.

The bible is better preserved and translated than any other religious text.

There are more extant manuscript copies of the bible than any other religious text.

There is more archaeological and historical evidence for the reliability of the bible than any other religious text.

And if that isn't enough for you, read it yourself - especially the Gospels of the New Testament, and compare it with the teachings of Mohammed in the Qur'an, with the Tao, with whatever other religious text you can find.

Do your own research and that should be enough to convince you that the bible alone contains the revealed will of the creator of the universe.

You may want to check the archeological evidence for the accuracy of Biblical history. There is alot of it in museums all over the world.

Exactly. But the thing is, other religions (most) don't push their book in others faces, so they're never picked on.
