there is a train every hour from Brussels midi to Amsterdam. This train is without reservation and it takes about 3 hours to reach Amsterdam. (see this link http://plannerint.b-rail.be/bin/query.exe/en?ld=IA&L=b-rail&seqnr=1&ident=3a.076642.1184656075&OK#focus) The biggest Belgian airport (zaventem) isn't at walking distance to the station but there are frequent direct trains. (see this link http://hari.b-holding.be/Hafas/bin/query.exe/en?seqnr=1&ident=34.0414012.1184659650&OK#focus).
You can also take the thalys to amsterdam but then you need a reservation and it's more expensive.
I wouldn't fly unless you can fly directly to amsterdam...if you have to change in Brussels it would take you to much time...

You can take a train from the brussels airport to Brussels Nord or Midi and catch trains to Amsterdam. Most of those trians will stop at Amsterdam airport. The faster trains called Thalys are more expensive, like 50 euros. The slower trains are about 3 hrs. and cost 25 to 40 e..The Thalys are not really so much faster.

I once took a train from Amsterdam to Brussels and back.
Train stations are not near airports (you can take a local train to get to main train stations from airports.) In Amsterdam the train station is right in down town and in Brussels it's almost in downtown.
I do not remember how long the ride was (I think it was 6 or 7 hours, but I might be wrong, it was a long time ago.)
On weekends the trains are really crowded, but train is still more fun than flying.
