I just drove through Hoosier National Forest last week. I'm not sure if those are technically mountains, but eh, they seem like it when you live in Iowa.

Anyway, my boyfriend and I differ on this, but I like music I can sing to. I'm an alto, so I like female artists like Alanis Morrisette, Sarah McLachlan, etc. However, some of that is too slow for me, so I also like something with a beat, something I can dance too (a little, no getting carried away on the road).

My boyfriend likes metal and hard rock. Something aggressive. I can see the appeal there as well.

We both like funny stuff. Comedians and funny songs.

We took the iPod and the FM transmitter on this trip (ten plus hours one way), and we had everything from Elvis to Megadeath. It worked out well!

Any thing by James Taylor, Lisa Loeb or Jason Mraz if listening to a cd. If singing with my kids, we like "Over the River and Through the Woods," "She'll Be Coming Around The Mountain," and "The Happy Wanderer (Valderee Valderah.)"

Poxy Boggards. Bawdy to mild to really frigging offensive drinking songs, which I can sing at the top of my lungs and bother no one in the car. Keeps me entertained and awake on long stretches.

In the mountains you may also like John Denver or some classical music.

I have two young kids who absolutely love They Might Be Giants. I have a toddler CD that adults could learn to love as well called "Here Come the ABCs". Its very cheesey, weird and strange but oddly contagious and hours full of entertainment.
