It may sound a little unconventional, and maybe even embarassing, but if your dog absolutely won't come. you should squeal, and lie down on the ground, and your dog will come because they'll be curious. Another way is to squeal or screech, and then run in the opposite direction of your dog. Good luck, and don't forget to praise your dog when he comes to you :)

This is called A to B and it's how we do it for film work. You need two people for this. One holds the dog the other is about 10 feet away at first. This person has a whistle (one used it sports that you blow) and has treats. You blow the whistle while the other lets the dog go. Once the dog comes to you treat him with food and praise!!! Each time you do this get further away. Once your dog gets the idea you'll be able to just blow your whistle in a park with other dogs and people and your dog will come running. Don't forget this will take work, but the end result will be all worth it. All the best;~}

Go to http://www.apdt.com Find a trainer in your area. Take a few obedence classes.
I list that first because working with a training is going to help you so much. Even though I can give you a great answer, I can not see you work with your dog and give you pointers.
But like all dog training you are going to start in a small area on a 6 -8 ft leash. Have a treat in you hand and call your dog to you. 1 come- don't say come again, but call in a high pitched voice "puppu puppy puppy. say the dogs name. If the puppy does not come, pull gentle with the leash and then praise the dog like crazy and give a treat when they get to you.
Next do the same but as the puppy gets closer move backwards. puppy like to chase and the dog will want to follow. Praise and treat when the pup gets to you.
When the dog is doing both of the above pretty good. Move to different locations. Your dog may know to come when you are in the kitchen, but not in the living room. Train in different areas in your house and outside your hourse. THen take the dog with you and work at pet stores, vet offices, parking lots, etc. All with him on a short leash.
As your dog is doing better and better on the leash and comes every time, increase the length of the leash. Buy a clothes line and put a clip at one end. Start working with more and more leash.
Then as the dog is doing better and better start letting go of the leash.
This is does over months, not days.
Like I said at the beginning, go to a training class. It will help you SO much.

When you're training dogs that are very eager to play with other dogs and wont come to you, its best if you get them neutered first. If you've already done that then great. Try taking your dog on regular walks with a short leash so that he only allowed 1-2 feet from you're legs. Tug on him abrubtly when you want him to come and ignore something he finds interesting. After you do this several times, you're dog should learn to ignore distractions.
Start with a small distance, and call him with minimal to no distractions. Give the dog a treat if he comes, and if he doesnt, tell him no and take him straight inside (or into his cage) as punishment. Gradually increase the distractions and the distance, and he/she will learn to come at your command.
I know this sounds very tedious but it is best to have an obedient dog than one that runs away or something like that. Also, dont feel sorry about punishing you're dog (not physically hitting but caging or the corner treatment), because often when you are not consistent with punishment, it confuses the dog in what he/she is doing wrong.

This is probably one of the hardest things to teach a dog...coming to you when they are distracted. I have always learned that you should never let your dog off leash until you are totally sure your dog will not leave you or not come to you when you call him. I was amazed at a trainer I once knew that had two golden retrievers. He had the dogs outside and one dog decided to go after a rabbit. The dog took off and this guy yelled "DROP" and the dog instantly dropped to the ground. It literally could have saved the dogs life because the dog was running towards a busy street. At that time, I knew I needed to do some training with my dog!!! He taught me that you should have your dog on a leash at all times. If your dogs wanders away, call him...if he doesn't come at the first call, pull him towards you with a quick jerk and say "come". When he comes to you praise him and if you have one, give him a treat. You need to continue this for some time until your dog totally understands that when you call him, he needs to come to you. Or, you can do what the trainer I knew did and teach them to drop or lye down when in danger. A well trained dog is so impressive to me and is the smartest thing a dog owner can do for his dog!

I agree with "awesome" above as that is the technique that the trainers on animal planet do it and it seems to work for them
the best way is to make a loud unusual sound then either "fall" to the ground or jog in the opposite direction-this gets your dog thinking "what's going on" and then they follow you
always reward with a treat and praise when the dog finally comes-no matter how long it took the dog to come

Never punish the dog when it comes to you even if you actually have to go to it. Use treats to reward it when it comes. try taking an obediance class it works and they are a lot of fun.
