It was one of the stupidest comments I have ever heard.
The pope has now gained Pat Robertson status.

As a member of the Roman Catholic faith, I can wholeheartedly agree with the Pope's assessment that other faiths are incomplete without the spiritual authority of apostolic succession. He did not say that there is no salvation in other churches, nor did he deny that they are Christians. (Unlike many Protestants, who frequently claim that Catholics "aren't Christians.")

But without the authority passed down from the apostles to the present day, other faiths are "wounded," to use the Pope's own words. The Catholic Church contains the fullness of Christ's own teachings and the authority which He gave to His apostles.

The Pope did not "say" anything on the subject. He simply approve a new document that states nothing new: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20070629_responsa-quaestiones_en.html

Most Christian denominations believe that each of them is the fullest version of the Church of Christ.

While the Catholic Church also believes that she is "the highest exemplar" of the mystery that is the Church of Christ, she does not claim that non-Catholic Churches are not truly Christian. The Catholic Church teaches:

Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.

Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church.

All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 819: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p3.htm#819

With love in Christ.

No, the pope did NOT issue a proclamation that the Catholic Church is the only true path to salvation. You are letting the news commentaries tell you what the document says instead of reading the actual document for yourself. The document can be found at http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20070629_responsa-quaestiones_en.html

Here is a real quote from teh document:

It is possible, according to Catholic doctrine, to affirm correctly that the Church of Christ is present and operative in the churches and ecclesial Communities not yet fully in communion with the Catholic Church, on account of the elements of sanctification and truth that are present in them.[

It follows that these separated churches and Communities, though we believe they suffer from defects, are deprived neither of significance nor importance in the mystery of salvation. In fact the Spirit of Christ has not refrained from using them as instruments of salvation,

no, protestants think that salvation is thru Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Catholics try to make people think that salvation is only thru good works and a sinless life (which really isnt possible) - Protestant belief of salvation is simple but true, while catholics are way out on some other planet dont listen to the pope hes just some big show-off money-eating guy

I think it was a major step backward, what he did. The Latin mass he reinstated, or said was never forbidden, has statements in it referring to the Jews as perfidious and saying Catholics should pray for their conversions so that they can be saved. Well, I'm a Jew, and I think my relationship with God is just fine. He made his covenant with us long before Jesus was born. If the Pope wants to be like that, then I'll say what I really believe, too, that Christianity is a pagan bastardization of Judaism and that the One God is saddened by it. But, non-Jews were not forbidden to worship idols and men, so I don't really care what they do in their own homes and churches.

Yes I do believe what the pope said is true. The religion was started by Jesus. Here are some links to tell you more about this...

And I will add just because someone claims a religion doesn't mean they are more or less better. People shine through their actions.

Yeah, Catholics haven't said that in awhile but now this guy goes and starts it up again. Nice. Here's the old joke - I don't believe in heaven or anything but it's a cute joke - Line of people at heaven's gate and the first guy is asked what religion he is. "Hindu" Ok, he's told, go to room 121 but be quiet when you go past room 96. Next guy. "Lutheran" Ok, go to room 236 but be quiet when you pass room 96. Next guy, says he's an atheist. Ok, go to room 184 but be quiet when you pass room 96. Next guy says he's Quaker and asks why they have to be quiet when they pass room 96. "Oh, the Catholics are there. They think they're the only ones here."

"kinda" said it? Hmmm. I think he's entitled to his opinion. But having been raised Catholic, I still believe everyone does not have to be the same religion to get into heaven.

What he said is that salvation is through the Catholic church.

I disagree on all counts.

There is no salvation necessary. The Catholic church isn't required, and neither is the Bible. Religion isn't necessary at all either.

There was no 'kinda' to it. He flat out stated that only Catholicism has the means of salvation. Too bad for you Protestants.
