No. If they were caught, they were usually put in jail for a time.

However, when Muhammed Ali refused to go to Vietnam - all they did was take away his World Champion award and title. This pi**ed everybody off big time....so, they stopped locking kids up.

Jimmy Carter pardoned those who fled the country or who were in hiding for several reasons. First, by the time of the Carter Presidency, it was acknowledged by all that Vietnam was a situation that should never have happened and 58,000 soldiers died because of a political disagreement. Second, it was time to bring those thousand of young men back to their families. Third, it was time to start healing our country from the deep wounds inflicted by the lying, corrupt Nixon administration. Considering what Nixon did - and he was pardoned, it seem like what those young men did wasn't nearly as bad.

I wish it was going to be that easy to heal our country from what is going on now....It will be a long, long time before we recover from this illegal Iraqi war and the current corrupt, lying president.

Why are these megalomaniacs always Republican. Is it systemic?

Yes they were arrestered, but were put in jail or find here in Australia,i have no idea what they did with them in America.
If it were up to me,i would have let them go,as it was a war
That Australian's should never have entered,as they got no thanks from our then govening body, all we got was abuse
and the tag baby killers,i was glad that i didn't have to go through what the troops from here did,as i was never told to go to Vietnam and that to me was the best news i could ever get from a CO or 2IC.All my mates who came back from that place are either dead (KIA ) or killed themselves here!!

They were sometimes arrested, but were sent to jail rather than Viet Nam.

How do you think the other soldiers would have liked to be with such cowards? Heck, the dodgers would probably have been killed in "friendly fire" accidents on the first day!

No. They were convicted and sent to Federal prison for violating the Universal Military Service and Training Act (et. seq.), first enacted in 1947.
