doing exercises where one would hold a pad, and hte other would kick at it. now as i was holding this pad. and this guy kicks really damn hard! my instinct, for some reason was to flex my abs aginst hte blows. but it seemed that really i was just holding my breath or something. i dunno. after that, we did all kinds of exericses , sit ups, push ups and jumping jacks. i thought it was all easy. then i come home, like 45 minutes ago. and i seem to be having trouble breathing. any ideas?

You might have had your ribs pushed in slightly restricting your breathing, it will go away after a while, im all for conditionaing and learning how to take a punch but if someone is really hitting you hard just let them know! no one will think less of you, when someone hits me too hard that i cant take it i let them know and slowly work my way up to being able to handle that power, eventually you will get used to it but not if you dont start slowly and work your way up

Which is easier to pop:
a balloon that is blown up until it is tight, and stretched out?
a balloon that is barely blown up at all, and really stretchy?

When you were holding your breath, and he was kicking the pad, and you were flexing your abs against the kick, you were making your lungs and abs hard, and taut. Much easier for him to "pop" your lungs.

When I was taking martial arts (oh so long ago), my instructors were always telling us to exhale when punching, and when getting hit. Holding your breath seems natural, but will get you hurt.

I would recommend you practice breathing, and exhale when your partner hits the pads, just as you would if you were doing the hitting.

Good luck.

You should not hold your breathe when he kicks the pad. When he kicks do not fight against the way your arm moves. If you let it go with the flow of the kick, than it won't as much.

Next time, hold the pad against your arm and not your body. And hold your arm slightly away from your body so that it can take the force of the kick and give a bit without hurting your body.

You probably bruised some muscles or ribs without realizing it. I suspect that you just overdid it a little too much since you did not also get the wind knocked out of you so give it a week or so to heal. Also you should breath out as you see the techniques coming. That way there is less chance of the wind getting knocked out of you.

wasn't the pad on your hands? I don't think him kicking a pad on your hands will effect the way you breath...
