Wing Chun is a self defence based art that is easily learnt (the basics anyway) and can be utilised easily in most situations were direct and rapid responses are required. The training you do will also assist in fitness and this will also have positive benefits for your mental well being. Give it a try ...

I recommend Muay Thai. It's featured on 'Fight Science' and it's one of the most powerful form of Martial Arts.
I've been doing Muay Thai since I was 9 and it taught me how to fight back and how to act if you're in the face of danger (or anyone who wants to pick a fight). It's also good for striking you opponents but not entirely reliable when used for blocking.

If your primary concern is defense and conditioning, I would try to find a Krav Maga trainer in your area. Krav Maga is Israeli Special Forces technique that focuses on using your body's natural reactions in a fight. There are no "Kata" forms, as it is all intended to be practical (if you enjoy Kata, this would obviously not appeal to you). It also stresses awareness and conditioning, and has weapon defense training. Most places will let you try out a lesson or two with no commitment, so try it. If you don't like it, keep looking until you find a style that suits you.
Good luck.

You have several good options. Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Karate & Shaolin all meet your criteria. What is really important is to find a good school. Remember, it's the artist, not the art.

Jujitsu, Brazilian style...most people have no idea what to do once a fight hits the grounds, and EVERY fight eventually goes to the ground, Jujitsu will make you a on the ground expert....
I know jujitsu guys who will even let the other fighter knock him down just so he can get the fight on his terms...
Once on the ground, if you do not know what you are doing and you fighting a jujitsu master...you are done.
Go to youtube and look up gracie jujitsu...
