I'm not sure about your age but maybe if you did extra chores around the house without being told. Show your mom just how much you have learned about them. I have 2 kids and we own 3 female rats. Give your mom some facts about them, they are not dirty like some people think. Ours are constantly cleaning themselves and each other. They don't stink either unless you don't clean their cage. We litter box trained 1 of ours which helps alot, we just dump the box every once in awhile.
However it is better to have at least 2 same sex rats. They are very social and can entertain each other while you are away at school or where ever. With patients you can train them to do tricks.
Unfortunately some people just can't give rats a chance.
Good Luck, maybe you should have her look here for some answers.
EDIT:
Our rats have NEVER bitten us.
Let her know about the short life span they have. Average life is 2-3 years so it's not like it will be around for the next 12-15 years.

If there is a small animal rescue near you, maybe you can volunteer to help care for the rats & possibly your mom will meet them & change her mind. Even if you have to wait til you're on your own to have your own rats, being a volunteer will give you an opportunity to interact with rats on a regular basis & you'd be doing something wonderful for them.
Also, maybe if your mom is willing to do a little research & become more informed she might be more open to letting you have rats of your own (it's really best if you get 2 boys or 2 girls, they are very social & it's so much fun to watch them play together). Rescues or breeders are better places to adopt from than petshops but we've got some sweet & healthy rats from petshops too.
If your mom has an actual rat phobia, as opposed to simply being uneasy about them, there is probably not much you can do. I'm arachnaphobic & there's no way I'd let anyone have a pet spider in the house, no matter how much I love the person.
Good luck.

Hi So sorry to hear about your loss,it's sounds like he was a very loved little guy. As with all animals, owner and pet can have a very strong bond, sometimes more then words can say. I think it is okay not to cry for your pet at first, when I lost my first gerbil I was very upset inside but I didn't cry. Sometimes I think you can be so shocked and things happen so fast you just don't know what to do. By the sounds of it he was quite old maybe when you know somethings going to happen you prepare yourself for it. Try not to worry just because you didn't cry doesn't mean you didn't love him. Again sorry about your loss and I hope you are okay. Isabella.

The only thing I can think of is to get a different animal. If your mom can't even stand to look at a rat, then she's probably not going to let up. I think she dislikes the though of having a rat in her house, but you might be able to convince her to let you get a rabbit or a ferret. Good luck, and it's too bad your mom won't let you have a rat.

rats are great pets. it's hard to convince people who are deathly afraid of them. it took me quite awhile with my husband. i've had ten over the years and they have brought me much happiness.
this being your mom is a whole other story. maybe you can get her to talk to a learned pet store associate to explain the great qualities and to denounce the myths behind the bad reputations of rats.

It toke me months of picking to get my mom to let me have a rat. I have had my Izumi for 3 months now and my mom still wont touch her. Its just a matter of breaking the bad rap rats have gotten. I have owned lots of pets and my rat tops every one of them.
Good luck I really hope you get one.
