I left my boyfriend and kicked him out of our apartment. In the process of getting him off the lease we had, he is taking mail that belongs to me like my blockbuster movies and not giving them back. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do about this? I want to feel safe in my apartment and be able to use the mail box without the feeling of him stalking it and me. He also just recently came and took a trash can that I had out after he had moved all of his things out.

File a complaint at your local post office. The US government doesn't take kindly to mail tampering or stealing and serious penalties are involved.

You could also have the post office hold your mail for you to pick it up for a while. You could rent a PO Box. Whatever you decide to do, file the complaint.

Stealing mail is a federal crime punishable by major jail time!!! Like the others have said either have the post office hold your mail or talk to the postal inspector about your options. If he is also receiving mail at your apartment you may need to fill out a change of address form for his mail. It might be a bit hard to really go after him but if the mail clearly has your name on it then he cannot open it. You need to get those Blockbuster videos back before you have to pay for them. Talk to the police, that should be considered theft!

Lastly, if he is stealing your trash can and or other stuff you need to file a police report. People often don't and then there is no evidence of past issues when you actually need to take him to court over something major. If you can get the postal inspector or the cops to strongarm him a little with a nasty letter or a little visit to his house is normally all that is needed for him to fall in line.

Good Luck

"Ain't Love Grand". . .

First - file a complaint with the local post office. Postal authorities take a dim view of mail theft.

Second - get a restraining order. Contact your local police, find out if you have a woman's advocate type of office or battered women's shelter. They will walk you through the process for getting the order.

Do not delay on this. Don't wait until you are the victim of a domestic violence incident.

Can't help with much of this, but I suggest that you get a mailbox with a lock, or remove the mailbox and use a mail slot in your door.

Ask the post office to hold your mail and to remit to only you when it is picked it up.
