I believe God would have us to have public ceremonies as it demonstrates our commitment. Jesus attended a wedding or two. Seems like HE is in favor of marriage.

A Biblical marriage is a marriage that God approves. The couple must be committed to each other before they get married, otherwise, there is a greater risk of a separation. It must also be a legal marriage. God establishes and puts down governments, and has commanded that we obey the laws of the nations where we live. A legal wedding ceremony establishes your commitment to the person that you marry.
Commitment to each other, then legal marriage results in a biblical marriage.

: Marriage is an act of the will, not a rite or ritual. What makes you married is the act of your will, and the act of the will of your mate, that says to each other, I allow you to come into my life and become one flesh with me. It is the same as when you ask Christ to come into your life and become one flesh with you, in salvation. It does not matter who performs the rite, what matters are the wills of the two participants! It is an act of the will, not a ceremony. A ceremony is usually a part of the process, but it does not complete the action! A couple who is married by a judge is no less married than a couple who was married in a pastor or priest. God is the one who created marriage (Genesis 2:18-25). What matters is your heart before God, not the wedding ceremony itself.
However, no one is married in God's eyes if that marriage has not been recognized by the laws of the land in which the couple lives. God gave the laws and gave the government the authority to determine what constitutes a legal marriage (Romans chapter 13; Colossians 1:16). In the United States, a legal marriage is only binding with the necessary paperwork, and God honors those laws as well. God takes marriage very seriously; it is a sacred covenant not to be taken lightly. To not want to obey the laws of marriage in society indicates that you are not ready to make the unbreakable covenant marriage requires.
The Bible may not go into great detail about a wedding ceremony, but every culture that has ever existed has practiced some form of ceremony of joining a man and a woman together. God has built into human beings the understanding of a need for some form of wedding ceremony. Many understand Genesis 2:22-24 as God performing the first wedding ceremony.

Marriage is about commitment. Too many people are living together today, waiting to see how things turn out before they commit. Statistics show that those who get married after living together have an abnormally high divorce rate.
The Marriage ceremony was designed to be in front of God and your peers. So that you are held accountable by the community for your actions.
What about the kids? Whose legal name do they take? The father is not legally the father or actually responsible for them. It makes them (sorry for using the old word) bastards.
Modern dating in our culture implies a sexual relationship.
Your question is rooted in our culture. You are trying to drag down marriage to your level. What you need to do is rise up to God's standard.

I think a marriage should be before God and it is the two publicly expressing vows to commit to each other for life. God views marriage between Christ and the Church as a ceremony the bride and groom throw for the public in the Gospels. When Christ speaks of marriage or refers to marriage in parables, it is always taking place as a public ceremony where everybody is invited to the marriage feast and participate in the marriage.
Christ's first miracle where He turned the water into wine occurred at an official wedding ceremony.

God recognizes a legal marriage..we are told to obey the laws of the land. It doesn't matter if a preacher marries you or not, although that is defiantly preferable if you are a Christian.
Any man and woman can be committed to each other,,,look at some of the stars who have been together for years,,but not married...they are living in sin, in the sight of God.
So, if you are legally married and committed to each other for life...that is biblical

The union of a man and a women as husband and wife, which becomes the foundation for a home and family. Origin of Marriage: Marriage was instituted by God when He declared, "It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him" (Gen, 2:18). God's desire for His people was they marry within the body of believers. Jesus Quoted two passages from Genesis, "have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male an female; and said, " For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh"? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man seperate" (Gen, 1:27; 2:24; 5:2; Matt, 19:4-6). The role that the husband plays is outlined by Jesus Christ, who loved His bride, the church, so much that he died for her (Eph, 5:25).

Biblical marriage is based on a vow that you make before God and witnesses. Without a vow there is no marriage recognized in Biblical Christianity. It is not until you are willing to and actually do vow before God with a life long committment that you are married in God's eyes, and in the eyes of the church. Without that vow you are living in fornication or adultery and God's judgment in on you.
