I would say you need 4 things:
1. A passion for Christ
2. Talent
3. A lot of hard work
4. A little luck
Assuming you are of youth age I would get in your churches or another churches praise band now. I would also suggest you start getting together with others that have the same interest and put together a Christian Band and start playing cover tunes and consider writing your own stuff.If it doesn't work out you will always be able to find a praise band to play in on Sundays while you do another job during the week.
I would also find opportunities at concerts or festivals to talk to current artist on how they got in the business.

Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.
Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

Try singing in your church. And if ur 16 go try out for American Idol.
