What are the guide-lines for re-enlisting back into the service once you have gotten out? I got out back in March of 2001, I had six years of service, would I be able to re-enlist in the guard or reserves?

I know that in the Navy we use "computed age" to determine age eligibility. What that means is we subtract your years of active duty service from your age. So if you are 34 with 6 years of service then your computed age will be 28. As long as you aren't running into High Year Tenure problems and you can complete 20 years of service prior to your 50th birthday, your age will not be a disqualifier.

I am a Navy recruiter, so all I know is the Navy's guidelines. I do know that the Air Force doesn't take prior service and I don't think the Marine Corps does either. You might want to check with each respective service to make sure, and explore all of your options.

If all you're interested in is the Reserves then you shouldn't have a problem.

You did not mention the Branch so this is an Army link.

NG and Reserve may be more lenient.

I saw something the other day that stated "up to 59" if you could complete a full 20 by the time you turn 60.

I was thinking that 5 years ago I could have been a 47 year old E-3 or 4. Scary stuff!!!!

look at your dd214, depends on your RE code (re-entry code) lower right hand corner. Also depends on your type of discharge. If it were medical you must proove you have overcome your disability or injury that caused your discharge.

If you recieve disability or a lump sum you will have to repay this, if you enlist.

you must be under the age of 42... but here is the good news for those who are over 42, take the number of years you served and subtract this from your age,, this is your "new" age for prior service enlistment purposes.

best idea is to contact your area recruiter... bring your DD 214, they can explain all of this to you.
