I must say I am indeed thoroughly confused. I would like a camera that looks and feels like a D-SLR but I don't think I can actually afford buying one. For a second I thought of buying the Nikon D40, but it turned out to be "over the budget" for me. I prefer either a Nikon or a Canon and am pretty adamant about that. I found the Canon S3 IS suiting my profile but it just gives up on the ISO, shutter speed and LCD resolution. Can anyone recommend something that could beat the Sony ??

The Canon S5 is very good as well. (Forget the Olympus, horrible reviews). Might want to consider the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 too. Here's the DPReview side-by-Side of the 3 cameras you mentioned:

The picture quality of dSLR's is a quantum step better due to the sensor size, but I can understand budget restraints all too well! The nikon d40 with a 18-135 zoom would be about $725 at a reputable firm http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/485841-REG/Nikon_9419_D40_SLR_Digital_Camera.html/kw/NID4018135 so it's about $300 more.

I think you'll be happy with either the Canon 5s or Sony. The Sony has facial recognition and high def, so it's a good choice too!

There are only a few major differences between the Sony H7 & H9: The H9 has a flip-up 230,000-pixel, 3-inch LCD and a 230,000-pixel EVF, while the H7 offers a fixed 115,000-pixel, 2.5-inch screen and a 115,000-pixel EVF. Only the H9 includes Sony's infrared NightShot mode for capturing photos in almost total darkness.

The August issue of Popular Photography (not available on-line yet) has a review of the DSC-H9 and they make some comparisons to the H7. All in all, they seem to like the camera and said it's only lacking 2-3 features that would matter to anyone, but for $90 less than the H9, they thought is was an especially good buy. I know that's kind of vague, but check in at http://www.popphoto.com from time-to-time and you'll find the article. They do have a pre-release notice on-line at http://www.popphoto.com/photonews/3866/sony-announces-two-evf-cameras.html that you might find helpful.
