I'm curious. I heard that he did, but that was a rumor, but I'm confused now. I hate how the new pope doesn't. Any answers?

I do remember that -- it was something about a letter he supposedly sent to J.K. Rowling, but turned into an urban legend kind of thing. If I can track it, I'll edit this and provide a link.

[Edit] I was off a bit -- the press did proclaim that John Paul II approved of the books (falsely, as it turned out -- a large assumption was made on the basis of comments of a Vatican spokesman).

I have not heard of Pope John Paul II's opinion.

Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, wrote to the author of another book "Harry Potter - Good or Evil?" saying, "It is good, that you enlighten people about Harry Potter, because those are subtle seductions, which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul, before it can grow properly."

This is a caution for parents and readers, not a ban.

I have heard of some fundamentalist Christian Churches condemning the books because of the sorcery.

I personally like the books.

With love in Christ.

I heard that he didn't approve of Harry Potter because of the witchcraft in the book. It is a bit of a silly view as he was confusing fact with fiction.

I think they are extremely well done. With supernatural believability. The bible says suffer not a witch to live. I have to go with the bible and wish you wouldn't teach your kids magic is OK. As I have said I bled for your right to believe what you want so feel free and your welcome.
Any church leader that condones these books needs to be investigated and perhaps removed from his ministry.
Whether you believe in God or not If you are going to profess him Lord than play by his rules or get out.
Many are called but few chosen where do you and your children fit in?
No hatred or brow beating. I think everyone has a right to choose to go to hell in their own fashion.
Will these books send you to hell? Of course not. Will dabbeling in forbidden fruits against God's wishes well it certainly gives you something to confess and ask his forgiveness for. It simply misses the mark.
God Bless!

Who really cares? The Catholic Church would hardly approve of sorcery and wizardry, because it's against their dogmas, but very few listen to what the Catholic Church says any more. They will be history before very long, once people find out the truth about the horrors the Vatican has committed over the centuries.

I'm going to be honest here; I don't really care what they think about Harry Potter, and I'm Catholic.

It's a piece of literature. It's a book. A friggen book! Why the uproar?
You don't see the atheists marching around demanding their fellows to burn bibles, lmao...
