Excellent movie!
What sort of proof are you looking for? This movie is a work of fiction, I think that maybe the writer may have been inspired by the mystery that surrounds a military project called "The Philadelphia Experiment", which was an experiment performed by the Navy to hide or "cloak" a ship from view. Some believe this was accomplished by phasing a ship just slightly out of time. And it MAY have been this issue of time that inspired the writer, who knows?
There was also a movie called "The Philadelphia Experiment" that dealt with this directly.

Hello, can you say ENTERTAINMENT? Of course it never happened!
For one thing, the star aircraft carrier...USS Nimitz CVN-68... in 1980 had never been off the east coast. It had never been to the Pacific until 1986. Also, at the end while the ship was at a pier (actually pier 12 in Norfolk, Va) it was SOOO hokey! I spent 4 months as pier supervisor on the USS Nimitz and I NEVER saw that pier with NOTHING on it.
While on my last 6 month cruise (on the Nimitz) to the Med, every time we did an underway replenishment (supply ship comes alongside and material is 'high-lined' between the two ships) the Nimitz would play that annoying theme song from the movie!

The Senator never existed. The Japanese never fired their weapons until the actual attack itself. I got this info from an old World War II professor and class I once took. The question was asked because a bunch of us had seen the movie and needed to know. Your right great flic.

A lot of the movie was shot in Norfolk in spite of the California shots. We saw Kirk Douglas at the time. No, it was a movie only. I did have a CPO who claims to have heard (I know, I know) from a yard worker that he saw a ship appear at Pier 2 at D&S piers and then disappear leaving a hole in the water in the shape of a hull.
