I am currently working in a county jail.
In our "open booking area", which is over half the size of a football field, males and females are in the same room. At this point everyone is still in their streetclothes and going through the process, i.e. fingerprints, photographs, etc.
However they are separated by space, and there are always five officers in the room. In the four years that I have been there has not been one issue between having them in the same large room.
As soon as the inmates leave the booking area...they are never even on the same floor, let alone in the same cell.

I have never heard of them ever putting males and females together because of the problems that could arise.
