I had the same dillema in high school and found Spanish to be much more useful. If you live in the states, esp. california, you run into a lot of spanish speakers, not to mention spanish foods and other such items. french, although it sounds cooler no doubt, is not really useful. i flew on air france not too long ago and if i did take a french class, i doubt it would help me and only in that situation. so definitely do the spanish. if you already know some, then you are already ahead of the game!

Knowing both and english I would say learn spanish before, especially if you live in the US. French is widely spoken in Europe, and not just in France and Canada, the Swiss, and other countries speak it as well as many countries in Africa, even Louisiana. If you learn spanish 1st, learn French later and it will come super easy to you! The words are so similar and it will be easier to learn French that way. The only thing that I can say is hard is the grammar and I am a native French lol...good luck

Unless you are planing on going to France or Canada, there really isn't any purpose (that I can see) for learning French. Plus it is a lot harder to pronounce, read, and write. Half of this country speaks Spanish, and a large percentage of the world speaks Spanish as well. Plus Spanish is pronounced exactly as it is written, and is based on the same roots as English, so you will recognize similarities between a lot of English and Spanish words. So, I'd say, go with the Spanish.

If you speak Spanish, French will be easier. I speak English and a bit of French (enough to have a conversation, I guess) and I can find way more strange things, exceptions, etc in English. Spanish is also more like French.

Spanish
After Chinese and English, Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world today. It is the official language of 21 countries and the second language in many more, such as the U.S.A. In countries like Japan and Brasil, the study of Spanish as a foreign language has been growing at a very fast pace indeed in recent years. Around 400 million people speak Spanish worldwide and the number continues to grow.
The use of Spanish is also growing in the business world. As the Spanish and South American economies continue to grow and develop, along with the Hispanic market in the United States, interest in Spanish and Hispanic is also increasing.
Spanish is the second most used language in international communication, and it is an official language of the United Nations, the European Union, Mercosur and many other important organizations.

I believe Spanish is a great background for studying the other romance languages (Portuguese, Italian, French, etc), because it has been the simplest for more. However, if you study French first, you can definitely learn something else because the language can be complicated.
I really like French, but I learned Spanish because it came easier. Pick what you like, and not what you think will be best. You should do something you enjoy. :)

that kind of depends on what you intend to do with your life, where you intend to live, and how good you are at following up on your education. if you learn Spanish, it is much more likely you will have many opportunities to use it, without hardly trying. if you learn French, you may never use it again unless you actively seek out the opportunity to do so. i have a French degree and i have had multiple occasions to wish i knew Spanish and almost no use for French tho it is quite a lovely language.

Spanish is a more valuable (read: marketable) language. Nobody actually speaks french anymore except some old colonial spots in western africa and also in France, of course, except now in France it is more useful to speak Arabic, LOL.
