I have had 3 wisdom teeth pulled all on different occasions
with only a local. Just close your eyes and think of something else and it will be over before you know it. It doesn't hurt but
you can hear the sounds. A good oral surgeon will have that puppy out before you can say jack robertson.
The good thing about the local is that you remain awake.
However if they have to start digging roots out then I would want to be knocked out. I guess it depends on how bad it is.
Ask the dentist if he thinks it will be straight forward i.e. does he think it will come out clean. If it will come out clean then I would do the local.
Good Luck.

It all depends on what tooth is being taken out. I had both wisdom teeth and bicuspids removed under gerneral anethesia and neither hurt. The doctor will allow some time for the novicain to set in before pulling teeth. The only thing you should feel is pressure which is normal.

I dont' want to scare you - and I am probably the wrong person to respond. But I HATE DENTISTS!! Perhaps when I was a child and suffered so much with my teeth and gums, I never had a compassionate dentist. Even if they did numb me - I hated the needle. I suffered so much anxiety. Today however, there are so many things the dentists have to help people calm down. They might even offer you a valium to calm you if you become that upset. They can offer you music to listen to, and oxygen to breath while they do their work. It does not have to hurt. But it really depends upon your level of pain.
Me - they have to knock me completely out. Two valiums please - or put me to sleep completely before you start work.
I wish you the best. And I can offer you this, talk with your dentist and let him/her know your anxiety about the extraction. Most of the time they will consult with you and will provide you with the compassion you need to help you through it.
Good luck.

'only numb your mouth'.....?
Honey, its in your mouth.... where else are they going to numb you! You'll be fine, dont worry about it. I assure you......
You should have NO pain what so ever... you'll feel pressure..but absolutely NO pain! Depending on your pain threshold, some patients need more anesthetic (numbing/ shots) than others.
*IF, you feel PAIN of ANY SORT.... tell your Dentist! He'll give you more anesthetic. Good luck....

I've had a total of 7 teeth pulled and felt NO pain. Just remember to keep the gauze in at night so you you dont bleed on your pillow.
