Meg, it is a shame that you construe this as "Catholic bashing" - this is a question relating to matters that I view a little less flippantly than you obviously do

Marysia and Rosie - this isn't true, there are current "sins" going on globally on a weekly basis

God is Love - indeed, you are correct, sex offenders abound in many other places, however this question pertains to the Catholic Church

I talked to someone on this very site who told me he was approached by a lawyer to go ahead and file a suite against the Church even though he was not abused because he was an alter boy in the same Church that another supposed abuse happened and the lawyer really tried to get the guy to file because he said it was "The Gravy Train" The priest had died several years before and there is so much legal abuse of this---it makes me wonder how many actually happened. The Media never talks about the Baptists or the Methodists or anybody else --just the Catholic Church. I think they are a little too excited and doesn't this in itself say something? The sex abuse as far as clergy goes is straight across the board and not just the Catholic Clergy.

I am hearing you just another injustice done in the name of the god, and while meg may have a point about child sex offenders being in many cross sections of society, the fact that the clergy has them is the most offencive to our morals and decency, that is my hang up and i am sure many peoples hang up about the whole situation.

per capita i am sure that preist / clergy or any particular faith are in a no higher percentage than any other cross section of society, however due to the prestige and high value placed on them by their own faith they are reported in the news more consistently and with more negative press.

so why are catholic clergy in the news more than any other religion- easy, number of followers of the catholic church far outstip any other religious faith. it is a numbers game.

anyway the saddest point for me is that the people in who you place your prayers and hope of life after death are the ones causing pain and grief to your children and that simply isnt right, next we should debate if those offending clergy should be, assuming god is real and all the other various factors, granted admission to heaven?

now there is where the real debate lies for all you r&s people.

now cheers and enjoy

Just remember this. The only perfect One to ever walk the earth was Jesus Himself. Even the Pope is just a man. Catholics are just people like anyone else. Don't worry about pride. And don't let this get you down. Jesus asked you to follow Him, not other people. If they repent and ask for forgiveness, they will be forgiven.

A side note though: I am not Catholic, but I always disagreed with Priests and Nuns not being allowed to marry. They are human like anyone else and a life without intimacy will mess with any persons mind. I think if they were allowed to marry, alot of this stuff would cease to happen. God Bless and be well.

The Catholic Church is taking responsibility and creating policies to stop these crimes within the Church. I pray that those in the Protestant ecclesiastical groups will follow the Catholic Church's example and stop covering up sexual abuse among clergy and take responsibility for their actions.

Or, could it be that most of them are too busy throwing stones to get busy cleaning their own houses.

In Christ

kevindoran,

Priests are not forbidden to marry but may indeed choose to marry and leave the priesthood. If celibacy was the reason for the problem among Catholic clergy it would seem that the problem would be worse than that among those clergy in the Protestant church who are married and not celibate. But according to statistics it is five times less likely that the perpetrator of sexual abuse among clergy is a Catholic priest.

I saw an article stating the church has paid out around 2 billion in damages for these crimes. It seems that if human law is needed within a church, then the church has real problems and may at length have some major changes or will ...............The whole thing is beyond shocking.

Changing of the guards bothers you? Everyone has his pride, yet they leave because of it. One does not have faith in a catholic....put your faith in the God of life. When we gather we worship the one and only God. Anyone can let you down, but the Lord lifts you up in uncertain times.Pray about it.

There's nothing wrong with the Catholic faith.

It's the Catholic people ... particularly the church hierarchy ... who seem to continually try to push the limits of God's mercy and forgiveness.

Now we know how Jesus must have felt when Judas betrayed him, and when most of the other apostles abandoned him.

What about Ted Haggard and Pat Robertson wanting to run for president?

No, because Catholics have the Catholic *faith* and worship Jesus Christ, *not* the human beings who people the faith.
