I believe cat translates to gato in spanish.

When I was in Guatemala staying at a river inn twelve years ago a cat would come and share the chicken from my dinner every night. When I ask his name they said it was "Mincho". I thought it might be a diminutive of Benjamino. When I came back I adopted a six week old kitten and named him Mincho (he was supposed to be Ben when he grew up and of course he is still Mincho). My dentist's assistant is from South American and he told me Mincho is the common name for kitty cat in SA. So gatito and gatita are surely proper names for kitty cat and apparently mincho is common too.

like everyone said "gato". Be careful with it though it also means the boss' sidekick or yes-man, and is a common insult.
