I can only think of once that bitterness took ahold of me. Like a vine twisting around my heart and mind I slowly felt the life being choked out of me. I was consumed with hate for this person and for myself for hating. Forgiving myself and this person was the hardest, yet freeing thing I had done for myself

That the hardest part of forgiveness is when you have to forgive yourself. When we do something "wrong" to someone, the foundation of our actions is our past, because our past shapes who we are. If we seek forgiveness of that person, it is all well and good if they give it, but our past actions remain the cause of our wrongdoing. We must forgive ourselves of those past actions or our energy remains blocked and we will continue to do wrong in the same or similar fashion. Only then, through acquiring this level of clarity, can we truly move on.

Perfect love casts out all fear. We often find it easy to forgive others but we cannot forgive ourselves. We even have self-hatred and any trigger of anger can find us knocking our head against the wall, cutting ourselves or comtemplating suicide.
Bitterness, unforgiveness, resentment, retaliation, anger, hatred and finally violence and murder all stem from bitterness. Bitterness is sin.
By holding onto bitterness you are telling God that He is not needed in this situation. You have placed yourself in His shoes by judging someone else or judging yourself. Your heart says, "God, I will execute judgment here." But, Scripture clearly tells us that vengeance belongs to the Lord.
(Romans 12:19)

I sometimes have a problem with forgiving myself, and mostly run to the Psalms for comfort. I know I have repented and God has forgiven me, but sometimes my heart is still heavy. I see the same tendency in my son, and it breaks my heart for him. I can only tell him what I do, and pray.

If you/I had any bitter feelings than we should release them it is fine advice for everyone but let us go one step farther fill our hearts with love for our fellow brothers/sisters of all nationalities. AMEN!

Very true.
In divorce counseling we teach that you can not recover until you forgive your spouse and you can not forgive your spouse until you forgive yourself.
