Also what do you think of rats?

I found that a mouse is more "fun" than the other small pets. They have more personality and can be as sweet and loving as a dog or cat.

We live with mice & rats. Rats are *much* more playful & friendly towards humans, also smarter than mice & can learn more. It's also easier to find a vet who will see a rat. Mice are adorable simply b/c they're so tiny, but they're also very athletic & a lot of fun to watch. Mice usually love running in their wheels, climbing & exploring.
For the most part, we've had more behavior issues with mice than with rats. Possibly this is b/c all our mice are from pet stores. Our 2 younger mice were from a feeder bin & one of them has such serious barbering issues, we ended up having to separate the poor girls. The 2 older mice, who we've had well over a year, *still* don't enjoy being handled & act terrified of us, one more than the other. On the other paw, we had another mouse from the "older" group, who passed recently, and she was absolutely the sweetest, smartest mouse I've ever known. Her name was Depeche Mouse.
As for our rats, we got our 2 boys from a rescue & they're super sweet & cuddly. Our hairless girl is from a breeder & she's sweet, smart & playful. Her cage-mate, a hooded girl, was from a pet shop & she's very sweet. Our old girl was from a feeder bin & although we've tried for well over 2 years she has never become friendly toward humans, which is very unusual but I honestly think the poor girl just isn't right in her little head. We've lived with many other rats & mice over the years & I've never encountered one like this. Since anyone we adopt is a lifelong commitment we've been trying to keep her as happy as possible under the circumstances. If I knew anywhere else she might be better off, we would have taken her there if it had been in her best interest. Even the rescue person we adopted our boys from said she was probably better off with us than elsewhere. One thing we learned from this experience is always ask to hold the little ones you're interested in *before* adopting them.
This might be more information than you wanted, but it seemed appropriate to mention a couple negative aspects with the positive ones. Both mice & rats are neat companions, but rats are usually more interactive with you.

OK I currently own 12 mice and two rats. Mice can make great pets as long as they are hand trained from young. I have bought mice from the pet shop before and rarely any were friendly, so its important to socialise them from little! I have noticed out of the litters my mice produced the male mice were a LOT friendlier then the females were and enjoyed walking on your hand. the bad side of owning a male mouse is that they smell more than females. Rats however make better pets than mice do. They enjoy human company a lot more than mice and are definitely a lot more affectionate and fun, I call them palm sized puppies! They also don’t smell as much as Mice do. I prefer Male rats as they are more mellow than females, they prefer snuggling up to you were as females are more energetic and will run around more. Males also smell more and mark their territory, but not to worry there are rat diapers invented! Hope this helped!

I've had mice before and I definitely liked them better than hamsters and gerbils, but not as much as I liked my rats.
