My 22month old son plays around the back yard. There is a cover over the jacuzzi which is securely locked so that he cannot open it. But he likes to climb above it and run around. IT is very sturdy and will not cave into the water. In fact, I even use it as a wood working area becaus it's like a large work table.
At any rate, my wife thinks it's very dangerous to let him play on top of this pad, and I disagree. What does the YAHOO ANSWER community think?
Thanks

Well, I agree with you somewhat...I can see where you coming from at least. But there is the danger of him falling off. That's not a good thing. Also, he may not know how to right now, but at some point he may try to take the cover off, or crawl under it. It's probably better that the hot tub is off limits from the start, that way it won't be an issue later when he might do something like that. Think of it this way....Will it hurt him to NOT play on the hot tub? I'm sure there is plenty of other space for him to play in your yard. Better safe than sorry, right?

I'm sorry but I agree with your wife.

First off this is a 22 month old child so he should be watched at all times.

Second he is climbing on something. In a toddlers mind if it is ok to climb one thing he can climb all things. So once you let him climb he will want to climb everything else

Third if is playing with or on something he will think he can do it all the time. Even if it is closed or open. So if he sees it is open he will not understand why he can't climb up the ladder to play on it. This will confuse him.

He shouldn't be able to do this. Get him one of those little slides that he can climb up on and slide down. This is more fun and more safe than a jacuzzi.

Sorry I had to agree with your wife, but I think she's right on this one.

Well, would you let him play on top of any other large table? I don't think it caving in is a safety issue, particularly if you are around watching him. But as a rule of thumb, I wouldn't let a baby run on top of anything such as a table or high up place where he could fall off easily. And you wouldn't really have time to grab him so he could be seriously injured. . Sorry, gotta go with the wife here!

I'm a little mixed on this, because if he's being watched I don't see any reason why he can't run around on top of it. But, should he get the idea that he can run around on top of it, he might try to climb on and it could come off some day, or else not be properly clasped. if that should happen, anything could occur. I would find somewhere else for him to play, and discourage him from playing on the jacuzzi

I have a 2 year old and 1 year old and wouldn't let them near it. It is outside and has a lot of weather changes and can slowly wear out the cover. You might not notice it but one time he could climb on it and it could cave in. It happened to ours once when there was a really bad snow storm. Just be careful.

Is it possible to use a pool fence or something similar, around the spa, so your wife could be more comfortable with it being there?. I know that you say its safely locked and reasonably sturdy, but from experience I know that the little ones can be cleverer than one supposes, and you don't want to find out by accident that he's been watching how the lock works, and was smart enough to copy you.

even with extreme caution, accidents have a way of happening. having said that, overshielding the toddler could lead him not to experience making mistakes and learning from it. why dont you make a compromise? make sure somebody is around when the son is playing in the backyard. he should be supervised anyway. kids at this age tend to explore and can be hyper at times. he needs his space but at the same token, he needs to be watched as he can be prone to probing anything that gets his attention. the backyard is a good place for him to get his knees muddied and scratched and this is good. it is also full of stuffs lying around (and im not just talking about the jacuzzi cover) that might lead to serious accidents. somebody should should keep an eye to make sure this doesnt occur.

Boy....cheated on your wife, and want to know how much she could get if she divorced you....and now you want to let your baby play on a jacuzzi....because after all there aren't any safer places for him to play...right?...you should win Husband and Dad of the year!

umm...jacuzzis are like at the least 3 feet off the ground? and while 22 months is not very big....a jacuzzi really doesn't leave ample room for someone to run around on without taking a chance of falling off, and at that age and that height..no matter how small it may be...could cause a sprained, or broken bone, not to mention a possible head injury, or if he were to fall off and land on his face..ouch...not safe..and anyway..if there is a back yard could he not just run around it?

PS....its called therapy, you should try it.

It's never a good idea to let a child play around water. He may not be able to open it now, but one day he will and it will be a hard habit to break. He could also fall off. Sorry, I'm mom on this one.

I would think it is dangerous simply because he could fall off the top. I would never let a child that young play on top of anything like that.
